Besides rusty, what spinners?

jack1266

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
What spinners should I have besides rusty? I carry rusty spinners in sz 14 -18 but do not have any other colors. I want to know if there are any other go to spinners that I should have. Do you have a pattern that seems to produce more than others? I'm trying to crack the code. A rusty spinner doesn't always get it done, although it has been a work horse.

If you fish around a green drake hatch, you need coffin flies which are mostly white with a black thorax and clear, mottled wings. For the Iso, the bodies are darker (Claret colored). I tie some sulphurs in tan that can be cripples or spinners. But mainly rusty spinners. Also, tie some larger ones down to size 10 for March Browns. Cornutas and other larger mayflies are in the size 12 range. And light Cahills require a size 10 white bodied spinner, but no black thorax like the coffin fly.

Take a look at real spinners on the troutnut site: http://www.troutnut.com/hatch/4/Insect-Ephemeroptera-Mayflies

If you fish the summer on spring fed waters, a size 12 white spinner is worth carrying. Many of these waters have terrific hatches and spinner falls of the White Fly before and during dusk, typically during mid-August in the Northeast.

By the way, why would anyone need anything beyond Rusty Spinner anyway:crap:

:):):)

Off to fish Penns and Spring Creek in PA tonight and tomorrow ahead of the TU Mid Atlantic regional meeting. Have fun debating upstream versus downstream dry fly presentations.........

shoot me a text if you're fishin penns near the catch an release section. My buddy and I are camping between the catch and release section and the all tackle trophy trout area opposite side of the river from the poe paddy camping area. Should have some decent scotch and if you're lucky an extra cigar

Scotch you say? I wonder what that might be and perhaps will have to try some :drunk:

I agree, by the time there is a sulphur spinner fall it's so dark I doubt the trout see color but rather a profile. I love the Chauncey Lively style great red spinner with hackle wings or if fishing a trico hatch snowshoe rabbit fur wings. How do you like camping at penns thursthouse? This summer I want to take my wife and five kids camping and fishing, considering hitting up penns , big fishin creek and savage river state forest. Has anyone ever camped in savage ? I heard there is cabins on the north branch of the Potomac. Headed to VT the 21st o June , considering stopping at the upper Delaware , farmington on the way and maybe venture to the Rapid river if I can convince the wife.

We had a fantastic time (will try to post a report later) but where we camped I wouldn't bring women or children unless they're into roughing it. Our 'campsite' legit only had a picnic table and a fire ring (there were no bathrooms or showers or running water or even other people for that matter). I'm not complaining as that's exactly what we wanted, but we discussed how much our gf's would have complain had they come with us. Poe Paddy Campgrounds were relatively close to us on the opposite side of the river and we saw a couple cabins. Beyond that, I don't know much more about Poe Paddy.

How was the dry fly action on Penns? We decided to stay away as the flows remained high when we were there. Both Spring Creek and the Little J fished good to excellent with an epic spinner fall of both sulphurs and coffin flies on Friday evening on the Little J.

Only real dry fly action was about 30 minutes before dark and then continued on there after (at which point any fly tied on was getting attention). Of course there was an occasional rise (I would assume an opportunistic trout - although I'm not highly educated in the ways of trout yet), but I won't switch two or three nymphs out for a dry fly for one rise. The rest of the time, it was all nymphing and swinging wets, with nymphing picking up the most fish. Not gunna lie, it was tough fishing - when the water was up on friday coupled with the sketchy rocky streambed, wading had my nerves on edge. But it was a beautiful river and those browns fought well. Heard a report that the Green Drakes were just starting on the upper end on Saturday - so we probably missed that by a few days where we were.

I don't know if the trout can see color, but I can. So it something makes it just that much easier for me to pick out when its about to get dark, get some reflection off of the moonlight, I use it. So I tie my smaller spinners a light as I can get away with.

During daylight Trout can see every color in the Spectrum, including ultra violet..This has been proven years ago.

However during low light conditions into to darkness they cannot..Only gray cone cells work at that point.

Rusty's in different sizes work great

The wing is important..

Besides hackle I use a combo of Hackle and CDC.

Antron in faster water

And you might want to try just CDC only.Wing size is important..Many store bought are way to big compared to the naturals

When there are truckloads of Dorothea (Sulphur) spinners on the WB at dark I use a March brown spinner with a Bead-head sunken spinner is a size 20 tied 3 inches off the back.

This is typically right at dark into total darkness

It has To do with how many are on the water. If you say to yourself, shit how are the fish going to eat my fly with all the naturals ---- go sunken and put it right in there face..The bigger fish often eat them under the surface as they sink.

At dark chop your leader to 6-7 feet tops.More control and easier to handle when you cant see.

This must be a small bead. Do you use copper or does it matter?

Yes very small bead, just need a little weight.

I know someone out west that use's a little lead under the thorax.Use a light amount of hackle so it sinks easier..

Or you can tie in a little floss and a very small amount of CDC for wing.

You want it sink but be "flexible" under the water.
