Beaverkill Report

longvanilla

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
Great Day thurs. Headed up at 6:30, golfed at grossingers on way up and hit lower B-kill open water by 11:30, perfect clear higher water levels, weather cloudy am and gorgeous afternoon believe it or not.
Had one of my spots totally to myself and fish sporadically rising. Caddis coming off and took 2 smaller fish on caddis then tried Iso emerger and every fish covered slammed it. Caught 8-10 mostly smaller browns with one 13 and one 14 incher. Missed one bigger brown. Fish stopped rising at around 1:30.
Went to town, ate, bought more Iso emerges at Catskillflies, BS'd with guys in store. Went to upper Bkill campground to pick out campsite (for weekend with kids- hope weather holds up). Only one fellow fishing by covered bridge to a few small risers. Nice lady new to flyfishing just getting there. We chatted with her a while and I gave her a few dries as she had only wets and showed her how to add some tippet as her leader was getting down to the thick section. Hope she picked up at least one(would be her 1st on a dry).
Went back to lower Bkill for evening hoping for coffin flies spinnerfall. Didn't go to any of the usual good spinner places as too crowded but found one nice spot to myself. Sat watching, nothing until 8:15. Fish rising and caddis on water. Tried caddis, smaller spinners, bigger spinners, isonychia. Nothing, not even the smaller browns will take. Seined water and mostly smaller spinners. Tried sulfur emergers and Got one refusal so figured maybe I was getting closer. Saw some march brown spinners and some big dark drakes(brown drakes) and decided to try March brown parachute. Bigger fish hits it in a deep run , one roll and a short run I think I'm gonna be able to get him in pretty quickly but 2nd run get into current and just peels line off way into backing. I let him go a little but by the time he jumps He's run about 100 yards downriver and only 20 yards above a rapid(doh) I followed him about 30 yards but I"m out room as it drops to deep water. I put a lot of pressure on him and he stops and after a minute he decides its time to come toward me. A couple shorter runs and I finally get in the Fattest 18 inchfootball(measured) Bow I've caught in Bkill. I revive him and 1st cast another seemingly smaller fish takes in same place. Jumps and he looks even a little bigger than 1st.
Not nearly as hot and I get him in pretty quick but break him off while netting him so no measure but definitely a bit bigger. Rising stops. I pack it in at 9:15 happy as hell that I din't listen to weather reports and go to work today.

Question: Do any of you guys fish parachutes during spinner falls too. I suspect my parachute may have just been close enough to a spinner or a smaller decent imitation for a Brown Drake but Who knows. Fish sure liked it so thats what counts.
All in all Perfect day. Hope weather is Ok for weekend as I pushed camping back to Sat-Mon. Later.

The flyfishing shops in Northern Pennsylvania design Brown Drake spinner patterns based upon a parachute style. They seem to work well on Pine Creek in Northern Pennsylvania.

I am partial to Antron Clearwing Spinner patterns for my imago imitations.

Excellent story.....
