Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen,
Myself, Sh4ne87, as well as two of our other buddies made our way up to the Ausable on Thursday morning. We arrived at 530am at the Wildnerness Inn II to pick up our breakfast vouchers for a tastey meal at the Holiday INN Lodge...We made our way there and were greeted by a lovely waitress and indulged in a spectacular meal...Can not mess up the Western Omellete and a cup 'o' Joe!
On the way in, the FLUME was absoulely CRANKING and water was hoveting just below 4k...EEEEK! We left breakfast and made our way down to the lower WB as the elevation change is a much less, providing for some "slower" and more "mangaeable" water...As we arrived at one of our favorite spots, normally void of extreme water flows, was plagued with 4 foot white caps down the middle of our favorite glide. eeek. However, this area is home to lots of big boudlers and nice lies along the edge, so I was confident we would get into fish...
I stepped off the bank, as well as Sh4ne87, where the water is normally shin high, to be quickly swpet down stream with water up over the belt line...A bit wet, we hugged the shore and made our way up stream tot he "boulder fields"...
We quickly hooked into our first fish, and many came to hand after that...Some REAL REAL ncie fish too!!!! Soem holdovers, and some stockies...Heavy nymphs were the name of the game... We continued making our way up streamed where my buddy hooked and landed a HUGE 20'' brown on a bugger...Fought great and was released successfully!!! The stretch we fished was loaded! Fished there for the day and then went back to dinner at the Wilderness...Had a wonderful dinner, a pint of Yuengling, and was back on the river in a matter of minutes.
This time we headed down below Wilmington...Caught some nice fish down there, and (2) beautiful natives came to hand! Finished up the night casting caddis and hendos fromt he bridge and having a ball with the 8-10'' fish just above the dam, while indulging in a few UFOs..
Friday morning we got up, had breakfast at the Cafe, and returned to the spot we fished the previous day...Still plenty of fish and it was a blast!!!! Again, big streamers/nymphs fish slow and deep was the ticket...Some brutes came to hand...A few fish even took me down to the backing!
1030 am was registration for the comp. We made our way there and met up with a few buddies we met there last year and shot the shit until 1200pm struck... We immediately headed to whiteface, to be greeted by 8 other cars. Oh well...I missed a dandy fish int he pockets at the bridge and made my way down the "falls" to some pocket water just above spruce...Got the 1st scoreable fish, a nice 13'' brown...The rest of the day was slow, with a few short fish coming to hand, and only 3 mroe fish total for sh4ne and I...We lost soem BRUTES, however the high water made it difficult to steer them and get them to hand..oh well...
We handed our cards in at 8pm and then stayed for a few rounds at Stienhoffs...Nice to see the tyers there and I chatted with AJ for a while...THey cranked up the music and an individual was drunker than a skink, who began to run his mouth and be obnoxious, so we left...Headed back to our cabin and hit the hay!
Up at 630am to register again, we grabbed breakfast, delightful as usual at the Holiday Lodge Cafe, and off to whiteface we went again. Sha4ne quickly hooked up with a beautiful brown and landed it...The rest of the day was slow again...I mean slow in terms of not landing 25+ fish by lunch, which is normal on the WB in good conditions...We managed fish, but was nto fast and furious...
We tried out a few spots with some success...Shadow rock, Monument, River Road, and above the Flume produced fish, but the normal action as it usually does...
We turned the cards in at 430pm...I had 5 total for the 2 days, shane also had 5...Most people had 0-3...It just a slow day. I feel our "stupidness" or "drive" (haha) to cross the river and tackle otherwise dangerous water accounted for our fish...Without being agressive in this high water, you were not going to get many....
At 6pm, Bill, Hungry Trout guide, hande dout the awards...I locked up 2nd place in Pro Division, and Sh4ne got 3rd...Was great seeing the childrens group receive their awards, as was seeing the smiles on the guys who competed in the amatuer division for the first time..Priceless... Sat at dinner with the womens group and nancy from hungry trout...The prime rib was great, and the conversation even better!
There is an issue with a certain individual who comptes every year and wins every year, the pro division...There is rumor he cheats and yada yada, but this year was different. He had 7 other individuals come down with him from Canada, NOT register for the event, but sit on the banks and LOCKING UP the whole whiteface stretch while he fish...The etiquette he portrayed was ATORCIOUS!!! Whiteface Chamber of Commerse has asked all outraged contestants to write a letter to them, explaing the situtation...One our our BUDDIES was actually PUSHED out of the way byt this contestants father so he could get to the spot b4 my buddy...It was a damned shame....
Anyway, the guest speaker was aaron jaspers...What a presentation...I learned so much and am currently tying up some czech leaders and just put my (4) slinky sighters in the freezer after i boiled them...I can't wait to employ this tactic around me here and MASS and back up ont he west branch of the Ausable in a week!!!!!! Thank you Aaron for the awesome presentation!!!
After the presentation, we headed back to the cabin, packed our equipment up and got to sleep...We got up Sunday, had breakfast and made oru way home...3 hard days of fish, we decided to call it quits...Well be back up in a week anyways!!!! i cant wait!!!
Overall the river was cranking, but edges and slack seams were the ticket...The most easily accesible water was raped and pillaged by cmopetitors, as the river scared most away from exploring...Shane and I did some exploring and improv. tactics and were rewarded...Had a great weekend with the guys and can't wait for next week!!! River should be ON FIREEEE!!!!! Just hope they dont get too much rain!!!
ENjoy the pics!!!!!
