Advice for a first timer on the Upper Delaware

DJ

Never fished the Upper delaware for trout, but I think I'm going to take a vacation day and try. In my mind I see me floating/wading the Jort Jarvis area. For a first timer I figure this will allow me good access. It'll be during the day in the summer and not knowing the hatch I'm thinking streamers (muddlers, zonkers) and terrestials (hoppers, foams). How does this plans sound? I'm figuring I could get there once or twice this year? Advice, please. I don;t get to take trips that far often so I'd like to make the most of my opportunity.

DJ,
By no means am I the expert in this area, but I wanted to get this back to the top and add, maybe a little info...

If you meant the Port Jervis area, I think that is well downstream of the "traditional" trout line in the Mainstem. During the summer I suspect the water there is too warm for trout. Callicoon, I believe is the imaginary trout line in the river.(Hey, I'm SURE you could find trout, below Callicoon, but not like what you read about on this site when fishermen speak of their West and East Branch and Mainstem fishing adventures). Hopefully, some one with more experience can add more or correct me.

I also remember reading(some where on this site at one time or another) about how terrestrials(excepting ants) are not the sure thing that you might think on the Delaware system. Again, I hope someone will chime in.

Good Luck!

You'll need to drive north of Callicoon, which is one hour from Port Jervis. Take a look at flyfishingconnection.com or on this site for info on where you can wade fish - there are not many access points for wade fishing. The fish are extremely picky so you should also stop into one of the several fly fishing shops in the area for advice on flies.
