Fly tying database

A few days ago it was brought to my attention that the fly tying database can no longer accept uploads. I looked into the situation and as it turns out, the software is outdated and is not compatable with the new server version.

Of course I can easly fix this but before I dump $$$ into it, I would need 2 items:

1. A commitment from at least a half a dozen people who will use it and contribute at least a few flies every few weeks. Duplicate flies are not a problem as we all understand that everyone likes to put their own twist on things.

2. A commitment from at least 2 people who will moderate it and ensure that they upload a few of their own flies and patterns on a regular basis (at least once per week from each person) for people to see.

If you're going to commit, please do so with your word of commitment in mind. In other words, don't volunteer if you plan on uploading your favorite picture of your favorite fly then playing a disappearing act on us!

Please let me know and I'll install the new software if we get the commitments.

I can post one a month if that will help.

Most of my flys are very basic patterns, probably good for the beginners here, and they are fish catchers.

I would like to see detailed tying pics with step by step instructions in the database.

I like to see guys and gals post pics of their flys, their nice to look at, but a pic is not of much use to me without tying instructions.

A fly tying database would be very useful for me, but if you don't get the commitment you're looking for, I understand not investing the money in it.

Lets hope our professional tyers come through.

I'd be both a consumer and contributor. Yeah, there's lots of fly databases online out there, but I like the idea of "our own".... ones with patterns made by guys you know, who fish at places you know, and who you can get in further contact with. I find that to be a very valuable distinction w/ the rest of what's out there in cyberspace.
 
... also, this might be just me, but I had a hard time tracking it down just now even though I knew it existed. I'm guessing that the most of just typically just cruise through recent messages, and haven't incorporated the sidebar-embedded goodies into our typical routines. Maybe some extra publicity / easier linkage would get a project like this more into the mainstream? Just some food for thought.
 
I suppose I could commit to sticking a few in the Beginner section. I didn't know it was there or I would have volunteered earlier.
 
couldn't seem to edit my previous post... what i meant to add was that out of the various ways to get there, the usual route I used to take to it (which is still there) is right there under my nose, but has the title 'product reviews'. That actually kind of deters me in a way, as I'm not normally looking to buy anything, though I'm always on the prowl for patterns. It kind of leads me to believe that I'm going to see a bunch of reviews of the latest Sage rod or something.
 
I would definitely enjoy and frequent this database. I'm new to tying, so I don't know that I can commit to contributing right now, but I'd certainly like to as my abilities/confidence increase.

Well... I received the replies both privately and openly so I dished out the cash again. I just hope I didn't put good money that could have been used for something else to waste.

This was paid for by donations but still... I'd like to see the donations put to good use.

Just so everyone knows, your donations are put right back into the site whether it's for hosting, software updates, maintenance, re-registering domain names... It all ads up and at times, it's very time consuming.

Once I receive confirmation later tonight, I'll be able to download the new version of our fly tying database.

Now, If anyone has any ideas, please take a look at the current database and let me know if you would like to see anything different.

I for one would like to see something on the main page telling me when a new fly is posted to the database, otherwise it's forgotten about. I am 50 now and need a little help now and then to remember things.

This is definetely not a problem. I can replace the random reviews with the newest flies. All in Favor?????????
 
1. I'm in Favor of something on the front page that will indicate if a new fly or new review/comment has been posted.

2. IMHO: The template for a new fly doesn't contain enough fields to completely describe the materials.

What about wing, hackle, shoulder, tag, rib & etc?
The Noll Fly tying Guide, lists 16 possible components for a fly. Most flys don't have them all..... Can this be made more flexible?

Does "you's" need the apostrophe?

When the hell does this book come out, I've been waiting for a long time now. I got this book in the mail about a month ago. They dumped it in the driveway with the newspaper and I thought to myself, "Oooooooh... GOODY, AK'S Book finally arrived". I took it inside, opened it up, and it was the Yellow pages. WTF.

I'm starting to think this book of yours is all talk.

do you think you can include a chapter about me?

BHC, I was expected to see you posting flys in the database. Once you started posting your wets, I was wondering why they were not in the database. I wonder the same about BRKTRT. Hint Hint.

That's a great idea but it would cost a fortune to host and stream the video from this site. How large are the videos?
