Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

You think threads here get nasty....

I was reading a story today on ABC News that made me think of this site. Specifically, the nastiness that arises over some posts when people disagree on the content.

In this ABC story, some poor depressed kid killed himself live online while a whole group of A-holes egged him on with nasty posts.

Food for thought.

In my experience topics on a fishing forum tend to get nasty most often in winter or other prolonged period of tough or poor fishing. For the most part fishing has been slow lately due to the cold and I think you're seeing that frustration come out. We're all cooped up and on edge. I try to go hunting when I can't fish and will be out with the dog again tomorrow flushing pheasants!

oh great someone on this forum with access to guns :guns:.....!!!!! just kidding, just kidding:rofl:

Shouldn't that be pointing pheasants? What in the hell is wrong with you???

Oops, sorry, must be on edge myself:). I'm taking the dog out too tomorrow to blow off some steam...

Ryan,

You're right things do heat up here in the winter, but it's not cause the fishing is slow. The fishing is great. Unlike when they were youngsters, they just don't like going out in the cold anymore. So they stay at home and tie flys for next year. And when their fingers cramp up and their eyes can't focus on the flys they are tying, they come here and play grumpy old men.

I have to admit, it's nice having the river all to myself.

Actually if you go back and really take a look, this board heated up during the summer months when trout fishing was going strong.

To say it gets only action during the winter is far from being accurate.

There is no season... it's all year round.

Grouse, woodcock and quail are pointed. Pheasants are meant for the springers and Labs. :) That's just the way life is.;)

Depends on the dog i have an english pointer who points and my uncle has a golden who flushes the bird doesnt matter. The ruts in full swing going to try to arrow a big one personally i like feb and march gives me a little down time. Oh i forgot to mention the bass have been on the beach every night this is definitaly not the slow time of year for some.

Wht the heck do you mean, there a flushing dogs and pointing dogs. I've got a Labrador Retriever and it's not a pointing lab. I like my flusher just fine. The type of bird doesn't matter, flushers flush and pointers point. My Labrador flushed grouse and woodcock in NH before he ever flushed a pheasant in Pennsylvania. A good flusher will display body language when it gets "birdy" the hunter just needs to read that and be ready. Grouse are tough for anyone that reacts slow. My dog gives several signals, most notably his baseball bat of a tail goes crazy and his ears perk up.

We went out yesterday afternoon again. He flushed three, I couldn't get good shots at any so I didn't bother. At 10 1/2 yrs old that dog is still hunting birds with gusto. He's actually grabbed 3 this year without me haaving to fire a shot!

I'll always run a Labrador but I'm seriously looking at Drathaars or Munsterlanders to run as well. Drathaars are hands down the best, most versatile hunting dogs, period, and I've always wanted one. For more than a century, amongst the most strictly-controlled breeding program of any breed. Usually you have to commit to running a pup in all the tests for a breeder to approve you for a pup.

Sorry AK, I don't have a Chihuahua. I have a real man's dog and he only retrieves Yuengling Lager.

Joepanella and Fishpimp are not very happy with you AK. JoePanella has 4 posts and vows to never post here again because of you. I'm not sure about Fishpimp but he is fed up with you too.

Biggest pheasant I ever saw

Hi,

Been having lots of fun running the dogs this year. They are in their prime and loving it.

Lots of pheasants, grouse and the "biggest pheasant I ever saw"!!

Hunting the gamelands last week and the dogs worked a bird for about 100 yards and went on point. The biggest pheasant I ever saw took to wing and was donwed with a load of 6's. The "pheasant" actually was about a 10 pound turkey!! Great retrieve by both dogs, one on either end.

Lots of good fun,

jim

Funny you mention that story. BTW, what kind of dogs do you run? Near the end of our hunt last Saturday my dad and I took the labrador to an area near the property line of the farm my club has permission to hunt. Across the fencerow on the other farm the field was all standing corn. The funny thing was we saw two guys hunting WITHIN the standing corn (Illegal in PA). They saw us and the one guy asked if we had gotten anything, "No, several flushes no birds (pheasants) on the ground though" was my truthful answer. This guy then tells me excitedly "there's some big quails in this corn that we're after." And he uses his hands to show me the size of the bird he's after. From his hands it seems he's after a pheasant-sized giant quail. I said "you sure you don't mean pheasant? quail are'nt usually that big." "No, these are big quail. And they have long tails." I just smiled, said good luck and as we walked away my dad and I couldn't help but laugh together "Those two idiots think the pheasants are quail."

I can't wait to get back out there with the dog, Saturday's the last day for Pa's small game season until the late season starts in a couple weeks. My chapter is conducting our first trout redd survey Friday on Bushkill Creek and I hope to find time to get some fishing in this weekend, likely Saturday afternoon or Sunday. I'd bird hunt all day but at 10 1/2 my old labrador can't take that anymore. 2-3 hours of hard hunting and he's usually done now.
