The outer most layer of a fish's gills are only one cell (about 0.000039370in) thick & this is where oxygen extraction occurs. It's easy to see why gills are easily damaged. Keep this in mind when fishing in sub freezing temperatures. When out of the water a fish's gills can freeze in seconds. Please, don't take fish out of the water for hook removal, pics or landing (use a safe net).
