What size Bamboo Rod?

Hello,

When people decide to buy a Bamboo rod do they usually get something similar in lengh to a graphite rod they might own? Or, do you just but a rod specific to the type of fishing you want to do? I didn't know if bamboo rods typically run longer or shorter than graphite. Thank You

Regards,

Scott

I belive bamboo rods are generally shorter. If I am not mistaken by making the rods shorter they are able to achive a faster taper for boo or action. I would love to hear what others that are more knowledgeable have to say about the above statement.

They certainly are not like the graphite lazer pointers of today but a swelled but 7 1/2 foot rod can be a bit responsive.

Well...first off you have to decide to part with alot of your hard earned money.

I've had 2 bamboo rods and sold them both years ago. They were good rods, but I just didn't like their action as much as my Orvis graphite rod. Plus, they were much heavier then my graphite ones. But, I'm sure there's guys out there that like them.

I only have 4 cane rods and only used two of them regurlarly, so my experience may be somewhat limited ....

To me, cane rods seem a bit more forgiving with the light (7X, 8X) tippets used for small flys (#26, #28). You're not as likely to pop a light tippet during that moment while the inertia of a stationary reel spool is being overcome at the start of a "run". You don't need a 3wt (or lighter) outfit to safely fish fine tippets. A 5 weight is fine.

I guess a good rodmaker could overcome this, but my longer (8 ft Orvis Madison "Nymph") cane rod seems a bit too "tip heavy" and has an action like a wet noodle. The 7 and 7.5 rods are a lot easier to fish even though they were made by less prestigious manufacturers (Sharpe, Phillipson).

I can't say anything bad about the other one (a 6 ft Hardy), but a six foot rod is just to short for my fishing style.
