[h=2]OUTDOORS: Fly fishermen hear the call of bamboo[/h][h=3][/h]By Deirdre Fleming dfleming@mainetoday.com
Staff Writer

SOUTH PORTLAND -- Bamboo fly rods run upward of $1,500 and $2,000. That's not the kind of cottage industry that would make it in a poor economy. Unless you're in Maine.

Recently, four of Maine's most prolific bamboo fly rod makers gathered to teach, talk and maybe preach bamboo fly rod making at Maine's first Fly Fishing Show. And convert after convert stopped at their display tables to ask about the naturally grown material that forms the rods, the silk thread that colors the guides, the process that takes up to 40 hours to produce a beautiful and effective fishing tool.

"His waiting list extends beyond his life span," said Kathy Scott, wife of bamboo fly rod maker David Van Burgel.
It's a hobby for these craftsmen who are dentists, engineers, teachers and yes, fishermen.
But it's a calling more than a pastime. Their work is both part of the thread of history and a celebration of their sport.

"It's like a disease," said Joel Anderson of Auburn, who made his first bamboo fly rod in 2006.

Van Burgel estimates there are upwards of maybe 40 bamboo fly rod makers in Maine, but less than a dozen who build rods for clients, as do he and fellow artisans Anderson, Tom Whittle and Scott Chase.

"Often clients buy a rod and want another to fish for something else," said Scott, a fishing author. "But they're all in demand, which lends itself to them working as a community. Word travels fast about who makes them. We don't have a website. We don't do any marketing."
The history of their craft runs back into the 1880s, back to the 1900s when Percival P. Baxter cast a bamboo fly rod into Kidney Pond, and to the 1930s when nationally known fly rod makers lived throughout Maine.

Today, the disciples are historians who own original rods and admire the original masters.
"A lot of them started as gunsmiths around 1865," Whittle says with a smile.

"But the bottom fell out of that market. They knew they had to find something and they met these guys fishing in Maine. There is a long history of fly rod making, and it's still here."

They also appreciate that today's bamboo fly rods cast, handle and perform better. Rod makers can control the taper and adjust it for rods that target different fish, be it small brookies or King salmon.

They also can be geared toward certain flies: wet flies, streamers or dry flies.

It's art that's engineered.

"We use space-age epoxy, is one difference," Van Burgel said. "The old rods were slow and sluggish and would be used for trolling. These are precise. When you cast, you can feel the transmission of the line. You don't get the whip of the old rods."
Chase, of Scarborough, a fly rod maker for 12 years, made a name for himself nine years ago after building a rod for President George H.W. Bush.
"He never wanted another. So I'm not sure he used it," Chase said.

Chase still donates a rod a year to The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital, the classic gesture among bamboo fly rod makers.
Tom Whittle, an engineer, moved to Boothbay Harbor from Pennsylvania but often calls home the New York Catskills, where he is something of an artist in residence at the Catskills Fly Fishing Museum and Center. He's made as many as 15 bamboo fly rods a year, but usually makes about half that many.

Van Burgel usually makes about four to five a year.
"I don't like to rush it," he says.
None of Maine's four avid fly rod makers feel the need to explain the time, devotion and, at times, even money that goes into this craft. It gives them pleasure, even defines their spirit.

"It's been said if fly fishermen are a fringe group, bamboo fly rod makers are the lunatic fringe," Van Burgel said.

Link Farmer Alert. A.K did you get permission to publish this piece article???

Johnny, I'm gonna try to explain this if possible.

If you go to a yankee game, and bring a case of soda and a few dozen hot dogs and sell em, you'd get kicked out.

I'm not saying it's right...

But the reason there are 60,000 hungry people ready to buy your dogs is because of the brand that the Yankees built.

Same goes here.

You post links here bc NEFF attracts a large audience.

The NEFF brand took 10 years to build.

You can self promote here within reason.

Just use common sense.

But don't free ride on the neff brand name: either post the whole story here or nothing at all.

So what your saying John, is that its ok for people to post links to promote other people and other peoples sights, but self promoting isnt allowed. Doesnt make much sense. But ok.

Johnny...

Let's say I own a sports bar.

You come in and distribute Free tickets to tue Yankees game.

That's cool.

But let's say you come in to my bar.

With a flyer that says they can get free tickets to the Yankees game at your place.

All my business gets up and leaves.

That sucks for me, no?

I don't have a problem with you giving away tickets, but either give el all away at my place, or nothing at all.

So long as you don't lead people away from my establishment, do whatever you want on your own website...

But it ain't fair to promote at my place and take my business away, is it?

No.

I don't know why you even bothered the second time.

Johnny Jerk is simply thick headed.

One dimensional mind.

Id rather be a thick head jerk then a hypocrite, A.K.. Dont worry ill continue to call you out on YOUR link farming. Its only fair. I mean i didnt like having to click that link to read the full article. :crap: Sound sorta familiar? Hypocrite.

You are so blinded by your hurt feelings little boy you fail to see the difference.

You link to your blog, then on the shout box sell flies.

DC asked if you are going to link and make a profit, then he should be compensated for you using NEFF to conduct business.

Unlike you I don't have a blog, and I don't have any merchandise that I wish to sell via NEFF.

I linked a newspaper article on bamboo rods I found of some interest, that I must say a goodly number of the members of NEFF have a slight interest in.

So Pinhead how is my link and your link related?

You want to put money in your pocket at the expense of DC's board, that costs him time, money to maintain and operate, and you want to make money using it, but not willing to pay for that privilege.

As far as you outing me, you are totally delusional.

Unlike you, I didn't try to hide the fact I wanted to make money off NEFF and pay the owner his rightly share, I have nothing to sell.

As far as clicking on any link I put up, because you didn't go and read that article... you hurt my feelings.

Lastly, the more you post the more you sound like KLG Neighbour.

A.K your whole wrap is BULLSHIT! I dont solicited people. I was asked and i answered. Im not here on neff to sell anything. I dont link to make profits you moron. My Postings are not to try and sell flies either. I link and post fly tying tutorials because i enjoy sharing fly tying information. I am positive you can ask anyone and they will say that i dont solicit. Im sick and tired of assholes like you that think i only post for my own self gain.

I will no longer post any fly tying information here. Everyone can thank you for that.

You dont have anything to sell is correct. You give your dignity away for free.

what a quandary.
Johhny doesn't sell flies but if you ask him he will tie a few up for you.
is it selling or doing a favor?
I build rods I don't advertise it or market it in any way.
If you ask me to build a rod for you I will. is it selling or doing you a favor.
do I post a pic of the rod for all to see, I know people would love to see it.
but is it self promotion.
I believe unless it is blatant selling all is good. not like the spammers.
so do you want to see flies and rods from talented individuals that you know and provide all the information you could ask for or just google your heart away and hope someone answers in English
do I watermark all my pics. maybe copyright it. no I think not. there are many talented indiviguals that post there own artwork and ask nothing for it.
Be careful what you think you want. without the generosity of the artist you may have to rely on pay for view.
like the nfl network:rofl:
That's my rant
What say you:)

Depends... Is he accepting payment? Sure it's a friendly "favor" but let's face it, the man deserves to be paid for his time and materials (just as I do). Whether or not he wants to accept payment for services is up to him. I don't understand how a man feeds his family by giving things away. I know when I come home from work and I get a call from someone who needs a computer virus removed, I run over and remove it. Now as much as I love computers, there's no way in hell that after working 10hrs I'm doing freebies for anyone unless it's a close friend or family member. Some people feel differently about this and will fix computers after work free of charge. Good for them, I won't.

I build rods I don't advertise it or market it in any way.
If you ask me to build a rod for you I will. is it selling or doing you a favor.
Depends... Are you accepting payment? If you're accepting payment that's usually called a S _ L E and could possibly be classified as "selling". I'm sorry, but nobody spends a week of their time to build a rod for someone they hardly even know (unless it's for a charity or donation) as a 'favor'. To add to this... There's really only 1 reason that I know who you are; that reason is NEFF. So whether you think you're marketing yourself or not, you are. One of the first names that comes to my mind when someone asks me about a bamboo rod is "Ronbo"; it's not Glenn Brackett's name that comes to mind. Ronbo is who I've been recommending to people for the past few years. I've never even cast a Ronbo rod but I trust in the opinions of the people of this site that I don't question it. Of course that's not always the most accurate way to go but I've at least had the opportunity to feel one of your creations. I'm sure they cast as nice as they look. Once I receive the freebie, I'll be able to back that statement up with data from my own exerience.

do I post a pic of the rod for all to see, I know people would love to see it.
but is it self promotion.
It really depends not on how you see it, but as others see it. To someone new coming to the site they might say, "Wow, nice rod" or "What a piece of crap". To someone who knows you as a rod builder, it might come off as self promotion or maybe not. I've never made an fuss about it because in my eyes, I see you as simply displaying a nice piece of work that you're proud of. That doesn't mean someone else is thinking the same thing. Everyone is different. So the answer to your question is, maybe, maybe not but in the years I've seen you post here I've never said a word to you about it. You've sold how many rods throught this site? I don't have a number on this but I'm sure you do. I've never approached you for a kickback. It never even crossed my mind because you're low key. If I thought you were out here pimping your warez, I'd said something a long time ago.

I believe unless it is blatant selling all is good. not like the spammers.
That's fine too. You're allowed to believe this and you can even run a site like this. A lot of people do. I don't and every month I dish out a bit of cash to run the site the way I want to run it. I'm not the king of much but while I'm paying for this domain and host and software and donating my time, I'll run it however I like and while I'm here, I will be KING... KING OF NEFF. I shall be known from now on as King Dennis "The Terrible". Once we go public, you can buy into it and have a say.

so do you want to see flies and rods from talented individuals that you know and provide all the information you could ask for or just google your heart away and hope someone answers in English
I don't think you've ever come to this site and received an answer to a question in any other language unless it was in jest.

do I watermark all my pics. maybe copyright it. no I think not. there are many talented indiviguals that post there own artwork and ask nothing for it.
I remember when Matt Grobert approached me and asked me for a some pictures to put into a book he wrote. "Kewl... which ones would you like, Matt... I'll go and remove the watermarks from them". You see how this works, Matt asked and I gave. Got Zippo in return and never asked for a dime or complained about it. He let me know right from the beginning that I would not be compensated for it.

Now let me ask you something, Ron... Do you remember how this all started? I simply asked that if Utah Johhny was going to post pictures, etc... they would be welcomed with opened arms, just don't post a picture with a link that says, "if you want to see more, come to another site". I'll also remind you that I never said a word about whatever happened in the chat box but this goes back to how others perceive things. Some people thought it was self promotion. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't but different people will see it and come to their own conclussions.

I'm not sure why anyone would argue with me about this? Afterall, I pay for and maintain a site that's FREE for YOU, FOR HIM, FOR EVERYBODY. I've put countless hours into this site and when something goes wrong with it, I fix it. So what makes your time tying flies or building rods or flying airplanes anymore valuable than my time?

Although we do receive a few donations here and there, I don't have a paypal link in my signature. What I do have in my signature is a link to a photo gallery of my artwork (well... that's subjective but for me, it's my artwork)... Maybe you didn't notice that you can download them for free and use them as your desktop wallpaper or dartboard... whatever you like (and if you're nice enough, I may even remove the watermark for you). You just can't download them and present them as your own and try to sell them. Sure there is a donate button somewhere on the site but I'm not "marketing" myself here, but if I was, so what I'm paying (CURRENTLY PAYING) for it!!!

I'm really not sure what's so difficult to comprehend here by a few of you.

Be careful what you think you want. without the generosity of the artist you may have to rely on pay for view.
Without the generosity..???!!! Look.. there are a lot of websites you can go to but without the generosity of the webmasters doing the work behind the scenes and paying the monthly bills and paying for software upgrades and etc..., you just might have to rely on payperweb. Stop with the attitudes whereas you think coming to a website should be free just because you woke up and start to appreciate that the websites you visit are in fact costing someone some time and money to keep online. You get a guy like me who does this pretty much for a hobby and has pretty much 1 major rule and you give him a hard time because you dont' like it. What I don't understand is... if it's so bad here, why bother?

Johnny Jerk and Ronbobo obviously who have a stake in using NEFF to sell their wares are devoid of common sense because it effects their pocket book.

I support the artists.

Ronbo -- rod maker.

Johnny -- fly tyer.

And Cabarle -- photographer.

BECAUSE OF NEFF, I found out about Ron and bought a rod from him.

BECAUSE OF NEFF, I heard of Johnny Utah and brought him in to speak to RRTU.

And ALL CABARLE GOT WAS A FEW 5 DOLLAR DONATIONS FROM ME.

No KIDDING.

Sorry Dennis.

I'll send another 5 soon, you greedy BASTARD.

AK

A.K. :finger::finger: That's Utah givin you two.

Beetle nice fence playing.

Ron, your rant was appreciated. :)

It amazes me how wrongly i am persevered because i post free videos and free tutorials. Sorry if you think i have some hidden agenda. Oh wait I do. I enjoy when some one tells me Hey Johnny i seen your video on whatever and i tied that fly and man did it work. It makes me smile and thats payment enough. If you cant understand that, then go pound sand you black hearted baboons.
