Upper Pequannock River Fishing

Trout Nazi

And...Boom goes the dynamite.
Anyone here have any experience fishing the upper reaches of the Pequannock? The sections between the reservoirs, and even up above all of them? How about some of the feeder streams around the area?

Yeah, I've fished the stretch between the reservoirs. What's your inquiry?

Did you fish the stretch designated as the wild trout stretch? I'm interested in the stretch up above the reservoirs closer to Hardystown. Just want to know if there are fish there to catch, and what kind. End of the day, I will fish it all no matter what anyone says, but was just curious. I'll hike or bushwack just about anywhere to catch fish.

I was under the impression that the area between the resevoirs had very limited access. I have always wanted to fish up there, but never really knew where i could get into the river.

Limited access, limited parking, overgrown river banks. I just wanted to know if it was worth fishing before I hiked up in there. When it comes to the Pequannock though, I'm finding that people tend to be very tight-lipped, especially when we start talking about the upper portions. I've fished the WTS section and had good luck, but the river is much bigger than just that section.

Yes, yes, and yes.

Don't forget about the bears.

Its not really a secret, its just that not many people fish there because it involves a lot of walking and it is really secluded. You need to get a permit from the NWCDC before you fish.

The section of the Pequannock between the reservoirs REQUIRES a day permit from the Newark Watershed Authority and can be purchased at their office on Echo lake road in West Milford (and they'll tell you all the rules). ALL tributaries and the river above Oak Ridge reservoir are closed to ALL fishing, ALL THE TIME. FYI, it's not worth taking a chance without the permit as the area IS patrolled (for real).

I can call, but was wondering if they are open on Sat to issue permits???

Tks

I believe they are open to at least noon or 1PM on Saturdays. I think you can also get the permits in advance if you know what date you are going.
