Two Fly Competition - Ausable River May 17-18

LyNcH

Dries, wets, nymphs and streamers...it's all good!
Is anyone planning on going to the 2-fly competition this year?

I went to it last year for the first time and really enjoyed the entire weekend. I drove up early on Thursday and fished with Simms and Shane on Thursday, hitting areas of the river that are not in the competition area. On Friday, Rugby 10 drove up and we partnered (insert TT comment here) for the event and had a great time. While we didn't come close to catching the numbers of qualifying fish, we walked several areas of the river that we have not fished before and were rewarded with some very decent rainbow trout.

Friday morning, you pick up the score sheet, little giveaways and a rather nice LS t-shirt. The competition officially starts at 12pm. You have to turn your cards in from day one at a local bar somewhere around 6pm, at which time the drinking can begin while a few fly tyers show off there skills and a local redneck band plays cover tunes from the 80's......They do have Guinness and Lake Placid Brewary beer on tap, so it's worth staying for the food and a couple drinks. Saturday morning, the competition kicks off again at around 6am after picking up a new score card at a local fly shop. You fish the day and turn the cards in at the Hungry Trout Restaurant, at which time more beer flows, a silent auction takes place and dine on a nice surf and turf meal. There is a presenter and prizes are handed out. We woke early on Sunday, fished for a few more hours and arrived home at a decent hour.

All the proceeds go back to the river and for $75, it is well worth attending.

Here is the website.

Ausable River Two-Fly Challenge | Whiteface Region

Sorry for what is probably a really dumb question but, is this a c&r competition and on the score card you write in the species and length of fish that was caught, totally based on the honesty system? And is it simply two flies, ie one #12 prince nymph and one #12 BH black bugger? and if you lose those two you are done....or can you carry many of those flies as long as the selection is just those two.

Not a dumb question at all. Each day, you choose 2 flies and fish them how you want, individually or in a 2 fly rig. Once you lose them, you are done for the day. You can't swap out with another fly once it gets tattered or hook gets dull. The next day, you start with 2 new flies which can be different from the day before. This time of year up there, nymphing is the way to go if you want to catch fish in numbers......last year I used a dry/dropper set-up on my first day which was my downfall. It is C&R competition.

You have a partner who verifies your catches. They give you a cheap measuring tape for the competition, you are not required to photograph your fish. I will be using a measure-net this year so the fish are not out of the water too long. This is a great opportunity for you to give NY waters a try. The Ausable is a really great place to fish and the entire Lake Placid region is absolutely awesome. I have a room booked at the North Pole Resorts right in Wilmington.

Hmm.. That contest doesn't appeal to me simply for the fact that anybody can put what ever they want on that card. If they required photograpic evidence of the size of the fish it could potentially be somewhat fair.

I say we have a NEFF contest and put a small wager on it.

definitely an awesome time. ive been doing it since i was 16. some of the hatches you experience up there are spectacular with fish after fish on red quills, caddis, or even just a big simulator. ive had years where the number of fish you catch is insane, but also have had experiences where when the water is high, fishing is difficult.

the type of water to fish covers about just everything and there are big fight to be caught. if you have time, making a trek to the st regis is also worth while.

evan , the owner of the hungry trout fly shop is a class act and will provide you with any question you might have while up there.

I wouldnt mind seeing a bunch of you up there.
