The Thread Thread

Trout Guy

Brookie's or Bust!
Figured since Beatle demands more threads, I would start a thread about thread.

I've been tying since I was about 15 so I've experienced tying with a few different bends of threads. This past week I picked up a selection of Veevus thread and I tell you what.. It's the Cadillac of tying thread.

The diameter of the 14/0 is similar to UNI's 8/0 and surpasses uni strength wise. Thus meaning less wraps needed. It's really great stuff!

Please se share all thread experiences here!

I've been tying for a lot of years too. I have been using Veevus a lot lately but I don't think it is any better than other quality threads. Don't get me wrong, I like it but I won't be giving up my Uni or other threads to use it exclusively. It will have a place on my bench but it will be sharing space.

I must say that Danville makes a fine thread, rumor has it Olive is the best color, I don't mind Uni...some people seem to hate it......but my favorite(unless I need something strong for, well for , whatever)...is Largutan, except it is French:) It is made for salmon flies, but use it for dries and WOW!!!! oh, and try fishing a silk line......

What a great post. Thanks, Eric!!!!! This has given me the motivation to power through this day. Without this post, I don't know what I would have done.

I just wish I kept my flies long enough to test the thread durability!!!

I don't use thread. I use the testicle hair of a Tibetan Yak. Very strong, comes mostly in yellow, self replenishing so its eco friendly.

Hmm I would not recommend standing behind a yak when you yank out a pubic hair...

Back to the thread question. I too have been using Veevus in 16/0 for my midges and tricos and find it superior for its strength and small diameter. I don't think you can beat it for tying small stuff. Of course the olive 6/0 Danville is like a 12 ga. shotgun, best all around.

Of course when you use beads exclusively, you don't need or need to know about thread.

The only time I use thread is to secure a bead to a dry fly hook with a bit of CDC for those evening hatches.

Percisely, I've been using it to tie small midges and some smaller nymphs and it's great stuff to work with.
