popular area yes, i wont divulge anymore information about the location. and hope the ones who know where im talking about wont as well.

The place in question is my avatar. What is it?! how was it formed and what can it possible teach us.

my theory is its a waterfall that fell over backwards (upstream) after the plunge pool it created dug under the slab of rock itself but for it to fall backward almost makes no sense. but i say backwards because of how the channel before the pool is formed. like the water cascaded down it for a long long time. its was it has to be an old waterfall (or cascade w/e u wanna call it) that fell over backwards

anyone elaborate? anyone know for sure?

i know not this area but fell free to send a PM to me about it looks quite cool. No pun intended. I do however know that waterfalls are suicidal. they fall up stream as they wash them selves away. Niagra was once many miles downstream and its upward migration is what made the Niagra Gorge.

I can't really see from the avatar. If you have not seen it in person, it's hard to guess from that pic.

A lot of those plunge pools are the remnants of old waterfalls. The glaciers sometimes rerouted streams so that a big plunge pool was left in a smaller brook, or sometimes the brook carried more water water the glaciers melted forming larger plunge pools than would be expected by the size of the stream today.

Could you give me a good example of one of these that I might be able to take a gander at? It's hard to believe that in the thousands of years since the glaciers, that rock from upstream would not have filled these in. I guess there would have to be a unique set of circumstances.
Anyway, I'd like to see one.

The Blue Hole sounds like a place where GB would hang out, especialy since his old hot spot the Blue Ramrod shut down.

I've noticed the pic in your avatar for a few weeks. It looks like a lovely spot. reminds me of some of the salmon pools I used to fish in the cascades.sandy1_20_02.jpg

Some glacial potholes, kettle holes are whatever they are called fill in; others don't. Depends on if the stream where it is can keep it flushed. The "world's largest pothole", the Archbald Pothole in Archbald, PA, was buried and uncovered by coal miners (don't rush to see it). The nearby Seven Tubs have been kept open by the current stream. Plenty of other potholes are found in streams all across NYS, PA and into New England. Most potholes I have seen are partially filled since the current stream isn't much compared to the glacial flow.

nonono its not that, i know exactly what your talking about. enough debris in a circular flow that wants to travel downward will make a hole in a stone until the flow changes or it bores through the stone. this is not one of those. im not inept. this is just an amazing stream creation. i attempted to explain it but i apparently failed. oh well. GO HERE AND SEE FOR YOURSELF!

and dont get me started on vernooykill falls... im just too excited for it to be boiling heat so i can swim in these places and not freeze to death, cause if its not boiling hot out you will. lol
