Stream Imrovement Project for Eagle Scout?

Petergoodman

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
My son is ready to start thinking about his Eagle Scout Project, and was wondering if some kind of stream improvement project might be an option. Eagle Scout Projects can be pretty comprehensive and usually take more than a year overall, involving planning the project, obtaining approvals from various entities, organizing Scouts and adults to implement, etc. We are in Bergen County - anybody have any ideas he could look into, or can you suggest who he might want to talk to? One thought was to check out a wild brookie stream and see to create more deep water areas for sanctuary - not sure how workable this is, but any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

They get a lot easier when you get dad to do them for you.

I coordinated a few Eagle Scout projects a few years back. I had them build a half dozen float stocking boxes. I use them to stock the Pequannock and Rusty Spinner is using a couple on Flat Brook.
I also organized a private stocking on the Musky TCA. I securred all the permits, purchased the fish and schedulled delivery. It was a great time. :)

Stream improvement is a bit tricky. You may actuallly do more damage than good if you don't have the proper guidance. Having said that, I may have a project for you. I'll PM over the weekend with details.

Pete - I know what you're thinking about, but you'll likely find that the Scout needs to plan and to involve his whole troop and what you're thinking needs a machine operator and some boulders. But give it a try. I've had dozens of Scouts or their fathers reach out and have given out dozens of ideas. Other than the float stock boxes, nothing ever came to fruition.

Petergoodman - let me know what area your Scout can work in. I have a good public access project along the Musky that needs parking lot improvements, signage put up about a restoration project that was previously funded and completed, that signage designed, built and installed, and some maintenance of a riparian buffer planting project with a small need for additional plantings. I would think it would soundly qualify for an Eagle Scout project. But we're talking about Mansfield Twp. in Warren County.
