Stream Entomology

Hello all. Regarding sampling aquatic insects in our local streams, I was wondering how diverse the variety of insects are from season to season. What I mean is that if I were to enter the streamduring the winter months and seine up aquatic insects would I be likely to find the same sampling of insects during the spring or would possibly some major species of nymph be missing? I realize that some of the nymphs might be a bit larger in the spring but does anyone know if I would be missing any significant species of nymphs that may only be present during the spring or summer months?

What I'm getting at is that over the winter I was thinking of doing some stream samplings and then trying to tie up some flies to mimic those samplings. I would hate to tie up a number of nymphs only to find out that a major species has a very short lifespan and thus might only be present in nymph form during the spring or summer months. Again I am not talking about emerging or adult insects but only the nymph. I have purchased a few hatch books which make reference to different nymphs in a stream but have not found any reference on how long the nymph may reside in the stream before hatching. Any insight would be appreciated

PM,

Very good question.

I swear by Thomas Ames, Jr. book HATCH GUIDE FOR NEW ENGLAND STREAMS. In his book he will identify the species, family, nickname, when active, and what fly patterns and size to match them.

This should save you a lot of hunting in books for identifications and patterns.

Example

American Grannom-Pupa Size 7-12 mm
Family: Brachycentridae Genus: Brachycentrus
Nicknames: Shadfly, Little Black Caddis, Olive Dun Caddis
Active: First week of may to the last week of May
Fly Patterns: Deep Sparkle Pupa, Grouse and Flash, Emergent Sparkle Pupa Hook size: 14-18

Common Net Spinners-Larvae Size 8-14 mm
Family: hydropsychidae Genera: Hydropsyche
Active: All year long
Fly Patterns: Simple Caddis Larva, Glass Bead Caddis Larva, Netspinner Larva
Hook size 12-18

pmjasper-

Many univoltine species (those with one generation per year) undergo their major growth in spring and early summer. Those species are often sufficiently small during the winter months, that they are much less likely to be noticed in seine samples.

..This is the book all N. Easterner's should have, but I know even AK himself will admit that there's a buttload of bugs missing in that book. It's much more research than I could come close to, yet I feel I could've added a ton of hatches in there myself.. maybe I'm just too cool.

Before you answer that.. yes, I'm that cool.
P.S. I'm going to bed, so if anyone makes fun of me after this post I'll be sleeping and won't care. I'll be dreaming of big trout in the arms of hot naked women. GOODNIGHT ALL.

I always wondered where hatches came from. Thanks BB.

I had to read that twice... I don't have bugs. Unlike some people, I shower on a daily basis, sleep in a clean room and bedding.

Whats going on around here...? I am a holiday type person... Good will towards men (hello)... first that other person MACFLY slamming me and now YOU....

As always, learning you have to stay on top of these .... (remembering it is the holiday season)...

Jingle bells.. jingle bells... soon it will be.....

The holiday is over soon. Long memory....

Sorry AK, too much brotherly love for you huh???

We all know and agree that without you NEFF would cease to exist.

I'll come over and we'll build a snowman together.

As always, looking out for my fellow man,
