St. Croix Avid

Twism

Troop Leader
I just picked up a 9' 5wt that was "used" but basically new for a great price. Its going to be my secondary nymphing rod but after fishing it today im still not sure how i like it. Its got a medium action, but i would say its a pretty slow rod. Im comparing it to a sage launch, same size, but 4pc and the avid is 2pc. I also found the avid to be heavier and more so towards the tip. I dont hate it, im sure its great at rolling over a heavy rig but i short line nymph so thats not really what i do.

Anyway, what are other people opinions about the rod? I wont get rid of mine, but i guess i wish it was a bit different, would a 2pc tend to be slower than a 4pc?

Tom

I know a 4 pc is stiffer than a 2pc due to added furrels. I guess that would make a 4 pc faster than a 2pc. The 2 pc would flex closer to the but. If your unhappy with the rod sell it and buy what you want.

Hey Tom,

How old was the Avid you purchased? The older Avids had very soft actions. About 4 years ago St. Croix started using the same design for the Avids that they use in their higher end blanks (they called it IPC for integrated poly curve), which was supposed to eliminate transitional dead spots due to ferrules. At that point, the Avids became much faster rods. The short 4 wt. of mine that you tried once is one of the new blanks.

BTW, I still have a typing vise for you. Do you still want it?

Regards,
Fly Rod (aka Rodney)

I have the avid in the 9' 6" 7wt for the salmon and steelies and I love it. I can get the line out perrrttyyy well with it. Then again you have the 5wt so they are two different animals. As far as a rod though I love it. It was much nicer than my custom reddington that I have...and broke....

I have a 8' 5wt Avid that I bought last year. ***DISCLAIMER*** I am relatively new at FF. I love this rod. It is not as fast as a comparable Sage, but it works very well for the kind of trout fishing I do in NJ. I also used it when we went to Ireland, and it performed very well there also. I have a 9' 6wt Sage Fli that I use for bigger water, and for lakes. I cannot cast the Avid as far as I can the Sage, but I believe that the Avid has helped with accurate short casts, like this kind I do almost every time I fish in NJ.
YMMV

I tested 3 or 4 different rods at the FF show last year, and the Avid is the one that felt best for me.
I also feel that for the money I got a great deal!

I know this is an old post but in case anyone sees this, I have a 9' 9# and it is great. I am not much of a caster but in the right weather I can cast about 70-80' of Rio Outbound line with it. I have caught a few decent stripers (25") and decent blues on it and also had a few nice fights with small bones. Great all around salt stick.

They are a little too slow in action for me, but overall nice rods of very good quality. I had a 4 weight for awhile that I really liked on small creeks for trout.
