Special Guest Tyer(s)........

willowhead

~Jedi Dryfly~
Well guys, it's time to start thinking of who we want for our second annual "Gathering" special guest tyer(s). Last year i managed to get Poul Jorgensen to do a very wonderful demo for us at the CFFC&M one night, and this year i'd like to get a few suggestions from you before i "go for it." I'll approach anyone you guys would like to learn from, if i can. Just give me a few suggestions here on this thread and it's a done deal. Hopefully we might have one or even two or three lined up in time. I'm already working on a couple as we speak. Ok, shoot! mark.........

Also, don't forget that my allustrious co-host Allan Podell (Mayfly) is a very talented and proficiant fly tyer who has many years experience tying the classic "Catskill Style" fly patterns. He also has a new body material that he might want to show you all. It's fantastic stuff, and can be used on dries or wets. Makes a GREAT segmented body. I've been using it myself for a couple years. "Maybe" we can get Allan to do a little demo for us one night?????? He will also be tying at the CFFC&M on the Sat. afternoon of the "Gathering" from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. so...... mark

Good thinkin' Keith. I'm a good friend of hers. Shouldn't be any problem at all. I'll ask her this weekend. mark..........

Willow,

For what it's worth I'll probably be tying alongside everyone else at nights.
Mary Dette or Poul Jorgensen. Do I have to choose?

Allan

Willow, RW here

Give Allan a break. I just tied next to him at the Rendezvous all day, watched him tie on and off for three days at Danbury, and will probably be tying with him nights in the Rockland House at the "Gathering" all week. Does he really have to do a demo for the group? Wait! Wait! I think that's supposed to mean give "me" a break.

Willow, why don't you do a demo on your new "luv affair" with Atlantic Salmon Flies. Or get Andy Brasco, who is slowly becoming an expert at tying wet flies to do a demo?

How about Dave Brandt if he's around, tying a Wulff fly by hand?
Wait! Forget Dave...he charges $10 bucks a fly for one tied in a vise and $15 bucks for one tied by hand......too expensive.

Okay, I'll go with Mary too, but only if she gives the flies she ties away....like to me...lol....and Poul would be good again too. A lot of folks didn't see him tie last year.

Later, RW

RW & Others,

Tell you what. Maybe one night we could set up a VCR and view the Lee Wulff video, "I Was Born To Fish" subtitle "Lee Wulff on the Beaverkill". I'll bring the video. In it he explores some amazing things: like his casting technique, his descriptions of the various pools of the river and of course his tying. He ties 6 flies without a vise, including a size 28!

That's a GREAT idea Allan. I have that video myself, and have watched it about a dozen times. It is GREAT! Now the only question IS, are we allowed to show it (by law) in such a situation? I think it's ok, as long as we don't charge an admission. Anyway, i'll ask Joan soon enough if she minds. Don't see why she would as long as we aint trying to make a buck. As far as "chioces" go Allan, there's never been a choice to make, other than do you or do you NOT want to tye in front of the group. It's fine by me if you don't. Your reasons are your reasons. Poul Jorgensen hasn't been feeling well lately, and i would never ask him two years in a row to do what he did last year again for free. Even if, he would like to do it again, he's just to old to be having some turkey like me hasseling him to tye in front of a group for free again, imho. I'll demo my newest concept in A.S./SH flies gladly, if anyone even cares about it. But i'm a pretty sad tyer......so. RW, i would love to see you do a demo on anything you want, especially the Carrie Stevens style. Andy is going to be teachcing wets in a private/public situation all during the "Gathering." We're just not sure yet exactly how he's going to conduct the class and or where he's going to conduct it. Thing is, if he has a lot of interest, he'll need some semblance of privacy in order to be heard by his "students." He can't be trying to teach even semi-formally and have all kinds of extraneous noise in the background. And since it looks like we'll be in a bar, albeit off to the side. Nuff Said? I have arranged for him to use a space over at the Reynolds House that seats about 9 people at a time. And who needs to teach more than 8 students at a pop anyway? To be continued. mark.............

Willow, RW again

Ya know, this isn't a brainstorm, but it does seem pretty logical to me. We have a lot of really good tiers amongst all of us that are gonna be at the "Gath......uh, Fish-in". Why don't we try and set up a half hour or so each night to ask some of those attending to do a little demo for the group that will be tying each night at Rockland House. Some of us will probably be tying there until the bar closes (lol) and that gives plenty of time for those that are willing to do a demo.....just make it very informal like when Poul tied last year.

I mean les young will be there..he'd probably go for it. Then there's Monty, who won the fly tying contest at the FAOL fish-in at Caucci's DRC couple summers ago. I understand feenom is an excellent tyer and he'll be coming up and tying in the evening. You already suggested Allan...I suggested you...Hell, we got a whole untapped resource right amongst ourselves. Whaddya think? Early in the week we can have a sign up sheet, so we'll know right where we stand with a new tyer every night we're there. And you can still try and get Mary too. Shoot man, we got this thing covered. We could even have a little informal raffle each night to see who wins the demo fly. We should have good groups every night bein we got a bar right next door.

Hey, just though of somthin else. How bout Misa? I mean, she's "only" the Captain of the Japanese fly fishing team. Bet she'd be glad to tie up one of her creations for the group. How bout it? Think she'd do it?

RW

Sounds good to me RW. Your right about having plenty of good tyers already participating. There's no reason we couldn't all just take turns sharing a pattern. I'll ask Misa about it and see what she says. Boy this has been a long day. After about 3 hours sleep we got up at 8 A.M. and did 7 Project Access trails, with the help of other TGF members, various TU chapter members, and some other volunteers. Then we had a BBQ for all the volunteers. Between the trail work and the BBQ Misa and i helped teach a tying class with the CFTG and after the BBQ we watched the "Guest" Tyer at the CFFC&M. Went home and took a nap, got up and did the chorse, ran the dogs, and then went out to didner with friends and ran into a bunch more friends at the Riverside and hung out there for quite a while. Now i'm doing email and posting. No wonder i never sleep. Plenty of time for that when your dead i guess. LMAO, mark...........

Rw:

Andy B here. I got your News on fishing them light Cahills. I think your dead on. I had a simular experience yesterday on the Ken Lockwood Gorge. I was wet fly fishing and could not make anything happen. I switched fly's to the captain that is another white pattern with color trim and I had a take. The fish became a LDR and then it started to rain and ruined my experiment. Kept fishing despite the rain, however I switched to the Queen of the waters streamer in size 6. Picked up four hog faced Brookies that were close to the 15 - 16 inch range. These brookies were fat and when they hit it felt like some one had tied bricks to the end of my line. Not a bad day for my first outing in the season. It seems it does'nt matter as much about the rain when your catching fish.

Willow, it's about time you work that lazy a _ _ of yours. Glad to hear you had a good day. Don't worry I will give wet fly demo during the fish-in. If the response is good which I feel it will be I will give two if the demand and size calls for it. The fly that I will demo will be the Captain. This is a very good fly to show and tye. Married wings for tail feathers, Peacock for a tag, Floss body, Traditional Wet Fly Wings, and finally a collar or beard. I do prefer a collar on this fly. It's give more action to an already awsome pattern. Now let's talk, you know how I love to see other people tye. I would love to see Misa's work. I also would love to see Feenom tye the Sushan Postmen Streamer that he tied for one of my swaps I held on FAOL. Would love to see Allan tye a classic Catskill Style Dry fly that could be used that week. I think about guest tyers and thought I would not like to see any big names. You see RW is right. We have so many talented tyers gathered that week, I would rather see the Fish-ins talent then any one else. Don't get me wrong, I still want to see Bastian. Jorgenson, Dette, Brandt but at our Guild meetings. It's just that this week will be about us and what we can do and offer. Not to mention the friendships and fellowships to be made and had. Is'nt that what the Fish-in/Gathering is all about. To me the Fish-in is going to be two things, FUN & FISHING. The tying just goes hand in hand with the entire week. Tying is a big part of my life. Don't be surprised to see me sit and tye streamside at times as well. Later Gator.

Andy, i agree, but we have to think of others. You and i can, and do see these guys alllllllll the time. But we've got people comming from as far wawy as Maine, Georgia, Michigan, etc., etc. They don't get a chance to see guys like Brandt, etc. all the time like we do. And as a host it's my responsibliity to make the "Gathering" all it can be. As a matter of fact, i'm going to turn The 3rd Annual Gathering, next June into something even bigger on the tying front. You'll be hearing about it. I'm expecting you to participate. I'm having a two day tying event on Fri. and Sat. And don't worry it won't cut into your fishing time.........."much." LOL. Something like the Rondezvous, but perhaps a bit smaller to begin with, and then building it year by year. I'll probly have to move the One Fly Pattern Contest to Sun. next year. By the way, what fly are YOU fishing for the contest? mark..........

Mark I do understand and see your point for the really far away guest's that are coming. I guess I take things for granted and am very fortunate to be able to see the well known names tye. Any Who. My fly for the contest is being decided upon between two fly's I will either go with the Captain or the Black Turkey.
