Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

So, how about this weather we're having, huh?

I've been hoping one of the usual suspects would start complaining about the conditions in the Catskills so I wouldn't have to, but it seems this place is all tumbleweed and mothballs this spring.

So here goes: WTF is up with this never-ending heat wave up there? And the lack of rain? It feels like a semi-arid ecosystem around Hancock, and it's freaking June! Every day it's hotter up there than it is here in NYC.

Here's what I see happening and I want to know if anybody else is seeing it. There's at least half an inch of rain forecast all the time for some point in the ensuing week. Sometimes upwards of an inch, spread over several days of "Thunderstorms Likely." That rain never, ever comes. The projected accumulation sits there until we're 2-3 days out. Then it diminishes, and diminishes, and diminishes, and then it's gone.

There was .3 inches of rain in all of May!!

Does anybody (i.e. LU, Mac, DC or Rusty, the sole remaining members of this site) know what's up with this weather pattern this year? Enquiring moron wants to know.

Yes, I know. We are not getting rain.:)

Truth is, it is 3 years of well below average rains in northwest NJ. Last big rains were 5 years ago when Hurricane Irene was followed by Tropical Storm Lee. It's been fairly dry ever since. The Musky hit 60 cfs today, lowest in my lifetime or that I can recall. The weather patterns are weird, because south Jersey is plenty wet and got hammered today again. Southern NY nearer NYC is also getting enough. But our atmosphere here is so dry, any clouds coming our way dissipate quickly. I would just hate to see a massive hurricane bringing rain. But we're at the point where it almost doesn't matter. NJ reservoirs are mostly full or decent, but only where they can pump river water into them. That only leaves our trout waters in even worse shape:crap:

Well as I consulted my friends at the weather channel it appears we are transitioning or have transitioned from our El Niño weather pattern to La Niña which portend warmer than average temps across the US with the exception being parts of Texas (probably because God loves them the most:)) this pattern will continue through September. So wear extra sunscreen and start fishing for Bass.

And it now appears that all the "heavy rain" we were forecast to get tomorrow will again be diving to our south.
it's as if Mother Nature has been throwing all gutter balls in our alley with all heavy rains going north and south of our area. We seem to be in some sort of drought corridor.

You can't trust the weatherman. They're all mostly wrong. Remember the George Carlin skit about a near miss? Let me remind you because it relates the same way to the weather!

I always try to drive up when "Scattered Thundershowers" are predicted. Over the years, I find that "Scattered T-Storms" translates to, "High in the mid 90's, dry, with a chance of a puffy white cloud in the sky. If you want to get wet, jump in and enjoy the warm water.

I love the FUDR people but after how many years, still no cold water releases (not their fault but at least they try).

Here is what you need to do......Sacrifice Rusty in some warm water pikes fishery, send me a picture to make sure it's true...then I need gifts, DC, I'm going to Montana at the end of July.....I need a new fly line, so a gift of the line you never sent DDluver and Rusty's sacrifice, and Grobert already made his gift of CDC and Superfine dubbing for the Big Horn River Caddis hatch, should get you a few inches of rain later this month...The important part is the follow through, if I don't receive one of the requirements, I will NOT make it rain.......if you want more rain, I will require a free float from Fly14 and a free night in the TP...ALONE!!! I don't want any surprises whilst I sleep.......:)

That's it! That's exactly what I'm talking about. It's been happening all spring. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed.

Anyway, it's made for a short season (second one in a row) up in the Catskills, unless you want to deal with the crowds on the West Branch. All the outfitters up there put a brave face on it and act like the fishing's great, but the truth is, 80% of the system if you include the Beaver and Willow are unfishable right now. Low and hot. And have been that way pretty much throughout June, which can be the best month up there if the weather isn't fucked. Time to get out the Ugly Stick and Gary Yamamoto grubs and catch some smallies.
