Shannon's Fly Tying Event Feb 2011

AKSkim

Boston - Title Town USA
Dettes and Shannon's Fly Tying Event Feb 2011

I agreed to come and tie my Terry Cripple there, come late Saturday night,
I really hadn't given any thought about what else I could tie and even
more importantly what to bring?

Just chucked some stuff along with my vise into a box and hoped
to make it through it.

Andy B and I decided we'll sit together, which for me is
always a special treat because I get to watch him tie
those famous wet flies of his.

When I first arrive talking to Catskill John it had slipped my mind that
I already tie in public once with him up at the 2007 Fly Fest. Now I remember...

So I figured I would tie a few cripples and move onto some Smoky Mountain
fly patterns that I will be able to use this spring. Ok, figured there is another
short time taken off the clock. the Usual which are easy and fun, Jim Teeny
nymph, can use those when the Steelhead begin to fall back, again more
time off the clock.

Ok the plan is so far, Terry Cripple, Thunderhead, Female Adams Parachute &
Stimulator, Fran Betters Usual, and some Teeny nymphs.

Better bring my HP Mini, I'll be able to take some more time off the
clock posting a "Live Report" from the scene on NEFF and GST, have
my camera, take lots of photos to post.

Then it will be time to pack up, say good-by, and head off to lunch some where.

At the bottom of every USCG travel form you have to add in MMC
(Military Mission Complete) meaning all - done.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best (my answering service calling
me just before I have to leave home) always a prudent way to plan.
No such luck that morning.

Early Sunday morning.. I just couldn't believe all the local Gendames
looking for business as I creeped my way along the local roadways to Rt. 78.

NJSPtrafficstop1-1.jpg

Once on Rt. 78 (before Clinton) I couldn't believe the number of
State Mounties hauling unspecting motorists over for minor speeding
violations. How could I forget I was still in Jersey and not Kansas,
it's 65 not 72 MPH.

Well I arrived safetly in Clifon without a traffic stop to my record.

We had a very good number of talented fly tyers show up for the
FIRST ANNUAL ( I hope) Dettes & Shannon's Fly Tying Event.

The tables were very busy.

DSCN9812-1.jpg

Tyer's giving first hand tying instructions.

DSCN9818-1.jpg

Tyer's demonstrating the various styles of patterns everything from
Classic Salmon, wet flies, Catskill dry flies, emergers and nymphs
all under one roof.

HOWEVER.............

What really made the show was the people who showed up...

DSCN9809-1.jpg

Who took the time out of the day off to come and sit with us.

DSCN9806-1.jpg

Asked some very good questions.

DSCN9804-1.jpg

I think I enjoyed the day more than anyone.

DSCN9813-1.jpg

Got to meet some really nice people along the way.

DSCN9803-1.jpg

I was so grateful for everyone who came by that when I was
done demonstrating the Terry Cripple wing I was pleased to
give it to them. It brought lot of smiles on both sides of the table.

DSCN9814-1.jpg

... and when I did get a chance to look over to see what
my buddy was doing... He was doing what he always does.

Teaching interested people how to tie a classic Ray Bergman
wet fly the right way.

DSCN9810-1.jpg

I only took a small number of photos which is rare for me, I was
seated here the whole time, as this photo proves, when I finished
not only were my eyes blurry, so was my camera.

DSCN9414-1.jpg

In conclusion I only demonstrated one pattern and that was the Terry Cripple,
I was truly surprised at the interest in the wing. In the end I gave away every fly I tied.

I cannot end without saying how greatful I am for those who put on such a wonderful
and educational event; JIm Holland's Shannon's and Joe's Dette's Fly Shops thank you both.

Dan and John; all's I can say for your time and effort pulling this whole thing together and
making it the huge success that it turned out to be; is BRAVO ZULU.

Been tying my cripples Galloup style, I need to learn how to do that wing your way, try something new.

Your tying area is insane, I'm buying stock in Rubbermaid.

Great thread AK!!!
Was a great day
Good time all around!
Meeting you was great. You really went the extra mile showing me those maps.

Nazi, his cripple is amazing! Maybe he will shed some light and pointers for us "half fasters"
I was one the lucky folks who got one of AK's cripples is perfect! and the way he ties them is pretty cool.

Good time all around!

I agree.

Bkill asked and I said yes.

Then the night before I was asking myself.. why did I say yes?????

I am so very happy that I did.

So much, I look forward to doing it again next year.

It was the people who took the time out of their day to come and sit across from me that did it.

OK.. GL.. it was cool to meet you too....
