Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

SGM fly tying event Califon NJ

catskilljohn

Just finished "Land of Little Rivers"!
We are doing it again boys...the mid winter event in Jersey!

Shannon's Fly & Tackle and Dettes Flies invites you to our 4th annual Sparse Grey Matter Fly Fest on Sunday Feb. 23, 2014 from 10am to 4 pm. All are welcome to come tie flies and/or watch some of the areas finest tyers. This is an informal gathering of tyers and fly fishermen and a great way to spend a cold Sunday in February. There is no charge, but donations are gladly accepted. Food and beverages are available.
Location: Firehouse on Main St. in Califon, New Jersey

Hope to see you there, CJ

Just 2 weeks away. CJ's message needs a bump.

This has become my favorite tying event. More relaxed than the Sommerset January show, and there are no distractions like buying gear or rushing off to see a presentation on time. Just a bunch of great people and tyers, mostly from SGM and neff, getting together at a time of year when fishing in earnest isn't too far away, but some serious cabin fever still needs to be confronted.

It's special how the 2 fly shops with the most history from NY and NJ; Dettes and Shannons, get together on this one to promote a great event.

Let's hope for good driving weather.

So who's going?

I will try to make it.

This CJ fellow is a good dude.

I'll be tying some of my latest patterns. The recipe calls for a jar of mikes garlic eggs

Garlic eggs are whack. I've got a cure you can try that works a lot better.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

You are both a disgrace to NEFF, and the great endeavor of fly fishing.......you should be ashamed!!!!!

I'll see everyone there as usual. I missed it two years ago when we were restoring a mile of the Musky and we worked through the weekend. It's been growing in size each year.

As a newbie whose interested..what exactly goes on? You can show up and just watch people tie? Is it informative or is it more of a social gathering where everyone knows everyone? Is it worth driving an hour + for? Will beetle be filming?

It's absolutely worth going to TH. What exactly goes on? Picture a banquet hall full of talented tyers that you just wander up to, say hello, watch, ask questions, and learn. It's very relaxed and informal. You'll get a chance to meet some of the people who are on this board, and put a face with the name (for better or worse).

Shannons fly shop is right across the street, and Califon is a nice little town.
You can stop at the Long Valley Brew Pub on the way back and have a beer. What's not to like?

Ill be there with my two boys.

My younger son loves to weasel free flies from anyone who'll tie for him. He's got himself a pretty nice collection going.

Thursthouse,
Like Chuck wrote, please go! Its not some snooty, clicky thing where you wander in and everyone stares, these guys are used to the shows, interacting with folks and showing there talent in front of newcomers. There are guys tying everything, from bass bugs to midges, salmon flies and saltwater. Of course you can tie too, in fact its encouraged! Last year because of the past years attendance, the firehouse decided to open their kitchen and serve lunch right on premises so you don't have to leave. Burgers and dogs, soda and water, its great!

Looking forward to seeing the guys and meeting some new ones. CJ

This just in... someone at the SGM / Shannon's event will be going home with a new custom fly rod. A 10ft,3wt-4pc, with custom grip and wraps, metallic green blank and silver accents, I have used the sister to this rod all last year and love it. Primarily used for nymph fishing but casts dry's and wets with ease.

Not sure how they plan on offering it up, whether by raffle or door prize, but it will be there for the taking.

Good luck, CJ

Had a good time attending the SMG for the first time with my boys this weekend. It was nice to put some faces to the names on here.

Who got to take that rod home?

It was a pleasure meeting you sunsignarcher! Your boys look like they got an eyefull over there too!

Here is a link to Joes site where you can read a little more about it...

Sparse Grey Matter • View topic - SGM/Shannons Fest Sunday 23rd

Rick Fischer won the rod, he was pretty excited to hear his name called!

To everyone that came by Shannon's and Dette's thank you, turnouts like this ensure another event next year. CJ
