I have always been fascinated with double hooks. I thinks flies look really cool on them. Here is one I did on a giant double hook. I also made this hook myself which was not easy. I am slowly getting into hook making,just what I need another hobby.

Are double hook flies like these allowed on the great lake tribs?

I know you can't in ny,pa I'm not sure we used to fish two fly rigs bit I think your only aloud to use single hooks,I also believe Ohio is the same. I don't know about the rest,Michigan Wisconsin or the Canadian side.

I fish treble hooks in the middle of the night on GL tribs, so Mike would have to join me on a head lamp adventure. The best spots are right near the hatchery.

How did you get into the hook making? I hear it can be even more expensive than fly tying when you start buying tools.

Chris, I just wanted to try it. The tools are no problem good pliers and a metal file set. The trick is finding the right wire. My father is a tool and die maker so I got a nice set of files and he is working on getting me good high carbon wire. He is also gonna try to make me a barb cutter.

Do you have to anneal and temper the wire?

Fin, I'm no expert and there is almost no info on the internet about how to make them but what I found is. First you file them then bend them then you quench it then temper it. If you want to Japan it which means giving them that nice black coating you have to give it a acid bath before tempering. I started out by reworking some hooks. That was easy,just heat them to take the temper out then rebend to the shape you want quench and temper.
