Regal Vises!!

Ok, let's hear it. How are you guys liking them or not liking them?

I'm in the new market for a vise and I like how the Regal doesn't need to be adjusted. Anyone own the Regal Rotary?

I own the Regal revolution as well as a medallion. I like them both very much, simple and holds a hook tight. The revolution is great if your into light to medium rotary techniques. If your looking to do rotary like Norlander does, its not gonna happen with the revolution, but if you like to just rotate to apply wire, and other body materials, then it's great.

I have both and they work as well as the other for the most part. The Renzetti is a good rotary tool but I use it very seldom mostly to check the far side of the fly. The Regal works for me but you have to get the hook set in the jaws correctly or the hook will go flyin. I've done it a couple of times.

My next vise is going to be a Jvise. If I keep looking at it, I might just get it more sooner than later

I like my Regal.....the jaws are chipping, but it still holds a hook fine. I'm not sure why they are chipping, I'm not shooting hooks across the room or anything like that..

send it back then. I had a medallion before other medallion and my revolution and i never had that problem with any of them.

I have spoken to them, but do not want to drag it out into a public forum...all is well:) I like Regal....

Been tying on a Regal Medallion since December. The no adjustment for the hooks is extremely convenient, and I've tyed down to size 24 so far with the regular jaws.

Hey CTobias:

The Regal vises are good, but not for me. I do not like the Material holder and do not care for the way you have to squeeze to open the jaws. Now those are my two quirks and may not be yours or thers. The Regal Medallion with the
Stainless steel jaws is the way to go if you buy this vise. The jaws on non stainless steel for some unknown reason have a tendancy to chip. I also purchased the Big Game jaws for larger flies when I owned one and did not like the groove in the jaws.
I finally went with an HMH Standard for my home vise and a HMH spartan Orvis edition for my travel vise. Now what I will tell you is that a vise is a personal issue and what I might like you may hate and so on. Now I am speaking
from experience and was searching since last year for a vise for me. I am Through with Cheap ass new Renzetti vises and then owned Regals and parted ways due to my dumb quirks about the vise. I found HMH and love it. It really
comes down to you and your preferance. Strongly suggest that you Try all models that you are considering before you buy. Nice talking to you and hope all is well.

Hi John:

I believe what you say, but I and others on this board and other sites have seen or encountered chipping in the non stainless steel jaws. I believe at times the chipping comes from closing the jaws to fast/impropper hook placement
over a period of time instead of keeping a slow steady pressure while closing the jaws/ hook placement. Now I am like you and take a second to propperly open and close the jaws with equal force and believe this would aleviate the chipping.
Also, I see this for some people who shoot hooks out of the jaws, again a possible user issue. I have seen and heard of numerous cases with this. So honestly this is why I reccomend getting the stainless steel jaws for the casual to
average tyer. This ways you should have a great long lasting vise. This is based on encounters over a period of time. Now the time that I did tye on this vise, I did take the propper time to insert a hook and made sure the hook
per the Regal Instructions were followed. I never had a hook spit out on me this way. Again, I feel the vise is very good but not for me.

Flattening the barbs of hooks in the vise, may lead to chipping....that is how I chipped mine......:crap:

I have been tying on my renzetti for 15 plus years and have never had a problem. I still haven't had to replace the jaws. I have tied flies from 32's up to 8/0's and have never had a problem. I can't speak about regals because I have never tied on one,but I do love my renzetti and will never change.Plus I got it for free, can't beat that.

I own both the Medallion and numerous Renzetti's, when I production tie the Renzetti's rotary feature is pefect, saves time when applying body material. For personal tying I agree with Andy, its personal preference. The Medallion is just as good as the Renzetti's. Although one feature you should not overlook is the base. The heavier the better, it will keep your vise steady while aplying your material.

Not a fan of the Regal due to issues with the jaws chipping. My favorite vise hands down is the HMH Standard vise.

Started out on a Thompson A a friend who taught me to tie loaned ,Then I bought a Thompson 360 SLT used that while I tied flies for four shops for five years, Was guiding and a client's father asked me to tie him some full dress Atlantic Salmon flies and then place them in a custom inlaid frame. With that money I purchased a Renzetti Master Vice . I have not looked back , It also has a Ausable 2.5-1 crank, Profile Plate, Bobbin Holder, Extended Body tool, Salt water pedestal and Saltwater c clamp tooo. I sold that Thompson to guy who was learning to tie flies. I then bought a HMH Spartan with the regular jaws and added a set of Midge jaws. I have nothing against Regal , just not for me.

i have used a regal vice a long time ,great vice, have a cheap renzetti for rotary tying.the regal is my go to vice,i have it set just tight enough to adjust up and down and to spin
