Pike in the SBR(?)

Streamdance

Member
So around 10 years ago I remember my dad spouting some shit about Pike spilling into the SBR, and then in 2006, while taking a hike through the gorge with my class after the hurricane that season, I saw a nice size belly up half dead Pike circling off the bank. I heard they were under the Hoffman's bridge, but since I did not (and still can't) get by there too often, I was wondering if any are still holding throughout the stretch and if they're abundant enough to target, or if they're just a shot in the dark while seeking some trout?

I think I'd enjoy a pike on the end of my leader.

F&W started stuckin'.em cuz der - R- 2- manny treeot en dish rieerver,.. "GO GET SUM"!"...:smokelots:

Well, I mean it makes sense, I don't know much about Pike's spawning conditions. But if they were able to spawn successfully in a river bed like the one under Hoffman's, that could easily be a problem. But yeah, I just saw it as an easy attempt for me to maybe drill into a pike instead of waiting for my buddy to get his boat on the water.

There are Pike in the SBR..If you want to target them go downstream. There are many South of Clinton where the water slows...it even spills into a small lake that holds big pike, carp and ditchpickle....

As far as Hoffman's Bridge, I spied a BIG carp under there on Sunday evening.

A buddy of mine caught one over 8lb a couple of years ago , it was sitting right by a spring sucking up trout .

Fish the impoundment in the center of Califon. I saw a
monster pulled out of there about five years ago. It was taped at 36" of I recall correctly.

Lightenup: I'll have to remember that when I'm down there. As for the Carp, Can't say since I've never caught one, but I don't really know if my 3 weight could handle that pressure. But I'm excited for next fall, I plan on fishing that area a lot.

Lloyd: 8 lb pike = ^ :D Thanks for the warning!

Gadfly: I'm pretty sure I may need to purchase a 4-5 weight, after these comments.

I would go with six or seven wt. if you are going to target pike and carp...Carp fight like crazy, they are a hell of a lot of fun, and will strip line like crazy...They have been caught upward of thirty pounds around Clinton....I have seen large pike come out of the impoundment area in Califon...they were in Shannon's freezer.....:)

Would a 6 be considered going ultra light on these big boys?

I think for the Pike that would be fine..for the carp..that is pushing it..I'm telling you those bastards are strong, weary and fast....if you hook a good one on a six wt..you may want to kiss it goodbye ....Take a boat out on SBR in the slow sections..paddle slowly to a log jam or lily bed..then smack the water with the paddle, and watch....the water may explode in front of you because you just scared the shit out of a thirty pound carp....there is a reason they call them fresh water bone fish......If you decide to go for carp PM me..I would like to join you if I am not working. This time of year is great for the carp. Find an over hanging mulberry tree that is dropping fruit, whenever they do that, and you can get a carp to rise to a well placed mulberry fly.

This is just speculation of course --- BUT ---- If there are Pike in the SB they more than likely came from the Delaware Raritan Canal during flooding -- I highly doubt the state stocked them -- Another thing if they are in the SB then they are also in the main stem of the raritan and the North Branch the reason i say this is because the Delaware Raritan Canal paralells the Raritan in Manville -- It floods all the time -- it also floods into the Millstone river -- So the Pike probably started in the raritan and found their way into the SB

Peace
Dan

Hmm, I may be buying a 7 weight, for bigger game. I always like to stay light, but I also prefer efficiency so a 7 may be what I'm looking for. As for seeking them on an outing, I may have to wait until next season, because it'll be awhile before my next rod purchase. But all this info is great. I can't wait to start catching different species on the Fly. Caught my first Rock Bass on the Fly today while trout fishing the musky.... wasn't the pike I would have wanted. lol.

Um -- You ever see the Main Raritan FLOOD -- The dams are irrelevant at that time so YES the pike can over the years swim over the dams during HIGH WATER CONDITIONS -- The raritan dam and headgates have been NILL many times over the years when HIGH WATER has been present -- So Sleeps and Fucks Fishes go fuck yourself asshole You and your IDEA have no bearing and you sir have no clue

My God ther is some STUPID MOFOS on this site --- Has common sense gone out the window here or what??

The pike come down from bud lake

I agree I do not think the Pike could make it up all the dams from the Main Stem, even if the population size was big enough in the river. I do not believe there is that of large population in the main river to merit a migration.(There would be more caught if there were.) The dams would be a barrier. I say Bud lake or stocked. .

No state is going to stock pike in a trout river!!!! Most come down from Budd Lake - the pike spawning beds are right near the outlet. I think that's where most of the crappie and yellow perch in the upper river come from too. Pike and muskies have trouble spawning in rivers because they spawn in marshes If the early spring is dry they can't get to the spawning grounds. If the river is high and then drops the eggs can get stranded. High wet years can push a lot of fish down. One year the floods pushed a bunch of walleye into the Musconetcong and I caught one as far down as Penwell.

Years back some jokers caught a massive pike in Spruce Run Res and put it in KLG. I don't know if that is still going on.

I was speaking to my dad about this earlier, and he says that the "In Fisherman" reports in those years were claiming that they came from Budd Lake.

Is it possible they come over, or through the spillway from Spruce Run Reservoir? I am not sure how that dam works, but I have seen Tiger Muskie in Clinton years ago, and many Pike south of Clinton...that is quite a swim from Budd Lake....

Budd Lake is an ugly little lake.

I do not know what School you went to. Or if you even if went to school. What language that is that? I think it is Ebonics. For your sake I would hope to think you would not fill out a job application or resume with what ever that language is that you are trying to communicate with. You want to bust balls, ridicule someone, or be a down right Jerk off. Please use a language that is understandable. That crap you are typing does not impress anyone it just makes you look ignorant.

Guys,
don't feed the troll. If you block or ignore him he'll go back to living under the bridge at GST.

The south branch begins at Budd Lake, one of the primary sources for Northern pike eggs for the State. There have always been pike and pickerel escapes from the lake into the river. There are a couple of places in the upper river that they can find a place to live, the pond up by Bartley, the pond by Four Bridges, the pond at Califon and Lake Solitude. once you get to Clinton the is another potential source for Pike (and Musky) from Spruce Run Reservoir (Via the old Spruce Run Creek Outflow) and the lower river has pretty fair habitat to support them.

Still the numbers are fairly low and if you plan to "target" pike your chances are better going to the reservoirs. That being said I know of at lest one 4-5 pounder being caught from the pool by Gronsky's bridge, but that was before the TCA regs went into effect.

I also witnessed a pike in the 30" range in the Point Mountain TCA, again this was the year before TCA rules went into effect. It actually ate a sunfish he had hooked in the Boulder Pool just up from the bridge. It snapped the 5x tippet instantly, but we saw if a few times over the ensuing weeks. that one probably came downstream from either Hopatcong or Musconetcong or maybe Cranbury Lake or one of the Lakes on Lubbers Run.
