Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Pfluger Medalist

red owl

New member
I am reading Lefty Kreh's book and noticed this reel was mentioned. I was under the impression it would corrode quickly. Has anyone used this reel in salt water and what did you do to clean it and how well has it remained serviceable? I was thinking it is fairly inexpensive and I could get it and use it until I decided what I needed/wanted in a more expensive reel. It would be used for inshore salt- moderate/small fish.

The Medalist was commonly used in the salt for decades before specialized salt water reels came along. They are pretty simple. Keep them clean and be sure to keep them lightly oiled with a quality oil, and don't put them away wet. Plus, the older ones were built stronger than the newer ones.

I have several medalist used for salt, the 1498, the 1499cj anti reverse, and the 577 anti reverse. all lok new yet after years of service.
