Peckman River Info

Anyone ever tried their luck in the Peckman River in Cedar Grove? It looks like it could support Trout and was privately stocked some years ago. I saw a guy catching what seemed to be dace.

A guy in Cedar Grove used to stock it himself but he died a few years ago.
I can tell you that Cedar Grove and Verona sewerage plants empty into it. The water gets very warm in the summer and very shallow. I measured temps of
80 degrees a few times and I assume it gets even hotter. The water in Cedar Grove which only goes for about one quarter mile looks nice, a lot of rocks and shade but all of the water above it is very poor. It empties from Verona Lake and goes to the Passaic, the lake water is so poor they have water sprays going to airrate the water, their a a serious algae problem and ducks were even dying a few years ago from disease. As you can see the "headwaters" give it a bad start to begin with. Also all storm drains in Verona and Cedar grove empty directly into the rive. I used to live 50 feet from the river in Verona as a kid. Above Verona lake it flows from West Orange through the Montclair Country Club and it gets all the fertilization chemicals.
The only time I caught a trout was a spillover get away from the lake, after May nothing. There was also some articles written by the guy trying to stock and make something of it in the Verona Cedar Grove times if you want to research further. Its basicly a waste of time, I have tried a few times.

I tried it once...I caught a dace about 2 inches long and that was it...It did seem like nice water through Cedar Grove..if only it was clean and cool.

I have fished there twice and only caught dace:down: Although I have to admit I didnt use that many tactics (spinners, bread, wooly bugger:)) my friend claims he caught a small carp there and saw a large rainbow trout in a deeper section but I don't have any validation on this, I'm probably going to go back and try with worms and see what I catch because some of my friends claim to have caught fish over 12" in length there. My advice is not to spend a perfectly good day on it when you could go somewhere better, but if you only have an hour or so to fish and your in the area you should give it a shot! But also there are teenagers in the area that swim in some parts and do this>:smokelots: at night so be careful!

The rainbow is most likely a trout that was stocked in Verona Lake, they did put some breeders in there in the fall and do again in the spring. A good rain will send some over the dam and into the river but they do not survive very long. There are two deep spots, one is a place called Devils hole which is a waterfall and kids swim there. The other is on Ozone Ave in Verona where the
Verona sewerage discharges and people have caught some trout in there along with big carp (true shit eating fish). What a guy I am giving away the secret spots of the Peckman River. I live in the Verona/Cedar Grove area and will not
insult fly fishing by fishing it, therefore I share the secret spots. Again, it spillover fish that do not survive although at the sewarage discharge they may because the water is cleaner than the river water and more moderate temps.
This is only a 30 foot stretch of water. Have fun and bring your rubber gloves in case you hook a turd.

I grew up in Cedar Grove. I used to ride my motorcycle over the RR bridge above Devils hole. That was always scary because there were missing ties.

I would never think about fishing that river. To many days spent walking along the banks going home from school.
