A 6 weight should be fine. If you're a "light tackle" guy, you might have more "fun" with something lighter.

Leader tippet size depends on the size of the fly....
Use the "rule of four". Divide the hook size by four to get the "X" tippet size. If you don't want to spend your life changing tippets, rounding up or down one size is OK.

Smallmouth in general are not leader shy. I use anywhere from 3x up to 0x, depending on what I'm throwing. You don't need to go particularly long on the leader, either. 7 foot is long enough for poppers. The only reason to go longer is to get a fly down.

I suspect the most popular size rods for smallmouth are 6 and 7. Anything bigger is overkill. Smaller might give you problems if you want to throw heavy flies, but certainly aren't required by the size of the fish.

Smallies can be addictive; enjoy yourself.

A 6 weight is perfect for smallies, especially on bigger water like the Delaware, Lehigh, or lower Raritan still light enough to have fun with them and it has enough backbone to cast the bigger flies. A 5 weight will often feel too light for the job, IMO even a 11" riverborne smallie will work the hell out of a 5wt. Having fished smallies with both I much prefer the 6wt, and you'll want it if you hook into a 18-20 inch trophy river smallie!

I use a 9ft, 6wt TFO Lefty Kreh loaded with Rio Bob Clouser line and short leaders. I like Clousers, Gotchas, and Buggers in white (with or without chartruese), black, & brown. Many times I'll run a black/brown & a white or vice versa, tandem rigged.
