"You can observe a lot just by watching." Y. Berra
The recent comments by co-owner of HeadHunters Fly in Craig, Montana made me reappraise the thought of fishing out west in July or August.

It was really NYC's mistake with their drilling snafu and the fact that they will be releasing 1,500cfs from Cannonsville from now through September keeping the water temperature on the Main Stem UDR way below 68 at the end of the day as far south as Callicoon.

For the past two evenings, I've wanted to test patterns and see how the dry fly is at Callicoon Pool from 7:00pm until 9:00pm and it's been great.

Last evening the water topped out at 63. Clarity is great and the water is about a foot above normal.

At this point, why go anywhere else, when the best dry fly tailwater in the east is fifteen minutes away?

Lots of angler...

Althought the delaware is good for eastern standards, its not as good as the west in numbers of fish or the change of scenery. There is so much water and room to fish that there is no need to have to fish like what was seen in the picture.

Hey Tony what's hatching down that way. Just curious since I never fished it this time of year

Although you are taking this off topic i will answer for him as he is busy planing his western trip. Whats hatching are blue quills and salmon flies. You should buy a few dozen. Trust me

Off topic. Do you know how to read? Oh wait silly question

Good morning Mac (and others).

Sulphurs #16-18
Cahills #14
Caddis #16
BWO #18
Iso #10

I have been fishing mostly Callicoon Pool after 7:00pm until dark which is about 9:00pm.

Hatches are at dusk.

Water temps have not gone over 64 degrees by the end of the day by Callicoon.

Clarity is good.

Levels are up a foot.

Due to the 1,500cfs release at Cannonsville this is like fishing in early June but it's mid July.

This is what is used to be like prior to the valves being installed in the early 1990's.

The interesting this about NYC's fuckup is that anglers would have only speculated on how the fishing would be with a 1,500cfs release when the mid afternoon air was 90F degrees as far down as Callicoon and now you have empirical data regardless of what Serio and Kolesar say.

Yes. The wild browns and rainbows did not leave the Callicoon Pool.

Why would they? The water is cool and full with 1500cfs being dumped 24/7.

Yes. The aquatic insects are still hatching and yes, the fish are taking dries.

Albeit not through the day - mostly the last two hours.

Then again I have yet to fish on an overcast / drizzly day.

We'll see when that happens and I will report back.

Kolesar is pissed with me that NYC is drawing the reservoir down.

With me?

Hell, folks, I wasn't the one doing the drilling for a proposed hydroelectric facility so that the city could sell power and make some dough.

I'm just taking advantage of an unprecedented phenomena.

Given the choice - I think I would prefer fishing where it was 58 to 66 as opposed to 48 to 52.

More importantly, the fish must feel the same way too!

Tight lines.

P.S.
Many years ago I saw a few "Drill Baby Drill" bumper stickers in Deposit and Hancock - not so any more.
I wonder why?

Just returned from the Mo. Crowded, yes, but the amount of catchable fish in unreal. The lower river is warm below Craig, so, the crowds are between the Dam and Craig. Still worth the trip in my opinion!

We were out in Bozeman last week. The yellowstone was blown out for 3 days and thus the only options were the MO or the Upper Madison. One day 800 drift boats went down the upper Madison, with only the first few boats actually catching any fish. We fished the Mo a good bit and it proved to be the best option. Even when crowded the Mo is a fantastic river.

You lost me there. How does fracking have anything to do with a leak in the dam possibly caused by drilling for a potential hydro electric generating plant? I was with you right up to that point.....maybe I missed something in the translation.

Rusty, I took it as a joke. Although it could be I'm just a simpleton and am always looking for the humor.

The wade section...I don't want to fish from a boat....real men wade..
The Facts

oops I lost myself for a second there....I think the Wade section of the Madison is the one of the most scenic and trout filled places I have ever been........I was there in September though, so maybe it is more crowded earlier in the season.....
