Hi, not sure if this in the right spot or not but its my first post so don't be to harsh. I recently picked up a fly rod and have been "hooked". I recently bought an 8wt outfit and a 5wt. I was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction to find some smallies. I live in Bergen county and have only fished for trout so far with the fly rod but really would like to find some smallmouth bass. If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I have caught smallmouth in the Delaware river, any where along central and northern NJ...I found them in deep rapids mostly...but I claim no expertise in things of this sort. Good luck!

The Delaware is a great option, but you have some rivers that are much closer. The smallmouth bite should be dying off a bit now that the water temps should be well below 60. The Pompton and Passaic Rivers both have smallmouth, as well as the lower Wanaque and the Saddle River. I personally wouldn't consider any of them great smallmouth fisheries but they are there. The Passaic would probably be your best bet as a close option.

If you could get the time I would recommend a drive to the North Branch, anywhere from Natirar on downstream. Excellent smallmouth river and very little pressure other than the stocking points. The South Branch and the main stem of the Raritan also produce, but the NB is awesome.
