New indicator - steelhead leader set-up

LyNcH

Dries, wets, nymphs and streamers...it's all good!
If you haven't tried them yet, check out "Air-Lock" indicators. My thingamabobbers will never be used again. They sell them at fat nancys for those fishing the SR. They won't mess up your leaders , float like the thingamabobs and adjust in seconds. I used the same one for 5 days and it shows no wear. $7.99 for 3 of them, worth every penny. I wouldn't recommend them on your standard tapered leaders as the butt section may be too fat for the slot in the indicator. Instead, tie a leader up using Maxima chameleon. 3.5' 20lb, 2' 15lb, 18' 12lb, small barrel swivel, 12' 12lb Maxima ultragreen and 3' fluorocarbon to that. Split shot above flouro/ultragreen junction. If you get hung up, won't lose swivel, just have to bloodknot on more flouro. The set-up works great. If you have 25lb chameleon, use that for you butt for better turn over and progress down accordingly.

FYI - The steelhead are big this year, not as many in the river as big years, but their size makes up for it.

Been using these things all year when I nymph, my friend got a bunch free from the rep and threw some my way. They are awesome, and work on tapered line also. The key is not to torque the little screw tightener down too tight and you won't tweek your leader.

Wait a darn minute. What are you doing bobber fishing?! I thought you only threw a two hander and caught fish tight lining?

I learned from the best. :)

When conditions call for it, I will always swing. Fall fishing on the SR are not those conditions. Now when dropback action starts? That my friend is a different story.

haha ...He said lite tippet, like 3x....I guess thats light fer salmon and steelhead guys but not I :nose-picking:

Just a caution for the Fly Zones only: the total leader plus tippet can't be more than 15 feet. I don't think they check, but that's the rule to avoid "chuck and duck" with just mono out in the Fly Zones.

Airlock Indicators

Ok, while I very, very rarely fish indicators for steelies or trout, these look good. I use the foam "football" style ones or Fish Pimp brand because they adjust easy and dont kink your line. However, they move and fly off. Never liked the thingamawhatever due to ruining your leader. I guess I will pick a pack of 1'' ones up for the few times I need one.
