Need help - scuds

DaveR

Combat Fly Fisherman
Can anyone help me with tying instructions for a tan scud? Also, what are the best sizes?

Give me your mailing address -- I can send you a few, if warranted.

However, here is a good pattern to follow:

HOOK: Tiemco 2487 #16-#20.
THREAD: Tan 6/0.
RIB: Fine copper wire. 4x Monifilament is another option as well.
WINGCASE: Tan Antron back.
BODY: Tan Rabbit Fur with Tan Anton -- a mix of 2:1 Fur to Tan Antron Dubbing

Tie in at back of fly copper rib wire and overlay wingcase of Tan Antron -- sparse is good.

Blend rabbit fur and Antron (cut fibers in 1/4" segments before blending into fur).

Create dubbing loop and pick out fibers for a bushy, buggy look. Y

You should attempt to get any bulky bulges out picked out in loop with bodkin BEFORE wrapping.

Wrap hair chennille loop on hook -- starting at area just above hook point to just behind hook eye. Tie off with thread -- use a couple over overhand knots to lock in wrap for good measure.

Take bodkin and pull out fibers so that all fibers are evenly pulled leaving no bulk around shank.

Important -- Take a toothbrush and brush fibers all around shank - you are looking for a very transculent looking wooly worm like fly at this point.

Take Antron over wing and pull over the entire length of fly. trim off excess wing from behind eye hook. Take ribbing and spiral around wingcase and body. Tie off with whip finish, etc.

This is a killer fly -- key is translucent body and curve.

Good luck.

A stream/River has certain Colors which are usually Grey or Olive.Size 14-22 normally do it.

Tying Them.
Round Bend Caddis Hook(Sizes above)
Gold,Copper Ultra Wire or Spinning Mono lINE(pd depending on size)
tail-Pattern Color saddle Hackle Striped off Feather or Marabou.
Shellback-Clear Scud Back or Pattern Color Shellback
Dubbing--Sow-Scud Dubbing
Antennae-Pattern Color Hackle or Marabou.
Beadhead-Optional

Tying the Scud.
Place the hook in the Vise, and thread the Hook.
Wrap the Thread back towards the Bend and tie in the Tail(Marabou-Hackle)and then tie in the Ribbing and Shellback.
I normally tie in the Antennae at this point to make it easier.
Just wrap the Materials in and just before the eye tie in the Antennae and then wrap back towards the bend and then dubbing the body. You want the Body kinda thick so put a good amount of Dubbing because our gonna pick the Dubbing out to make Legs.
After the Body is Dubbed, put the Sheck back towards the eye and tie it in and the wrap the Ribbing and you've just tied your first Scud.

Good Luck M.Burke

P.S you should also tie them in a Bright Orange because when a Scud dies it turns Orange and Trout do eat them.
P.Pack Brook as well as N.Branch in Far Hills has tons on them, those fish are not selective at all but there's Tons of Grey Scuds. At the N.Branch both Grey and Olive works.

R.C. Scud

Hi Dave, first, i didn't have time to read the other recipes above, so if i'm being redundant...........just fire me, LOL. Anyway, here's my version of the R.C. (Ray Charles) Scud. Works so well even a blind man could catch fish with it.
Hook:any scud hook, size 12 to 20
Theard: 6/0 or 8/0 depending on hook size, color to match body
Wing Case/Shell Back: lately i've been using salt water flashabou
Body: two or three Ostrich herls, wrapped
and if you like, (i do), you can add a plastic bead, just about any color you like..........it's after 5:00 a.m. later, mark......

Thanks to all! I'll get tying this weekend. Also, I fish Peapack Brook alot so I'll try some grey and olive also.

MP - I'll send you my address in a PM.

Regards to all...

Dave

Hey Mark,

What's up with the Ostrich Herl in the scud? Is it dark like Peacock Herl or lighter?

Stuck here in West Palm Beach wishing I could fish with all the nice weather in NJ this weekend...ugh...

Regards,
Dave

Dave, how you doin' Bro? I have Ostrich herl in many different colors, but for scuds i usually use grey. A rib is totally unessesary, but you can put one if your worried about durability. I spose it does help, but if you tye the shell back down good and tight, your fly will be druable. And anyway, if you catch a few fish, and have to tye on another fly.........that's not the end of the world. Just bring plenty........no biggie. To me what's more important is getting enough for a fishing day tyed up in one eve. asap, so i can get on with tying what's a lot more fun and important, Salmon Flies. Go head and put the bead on them though, they sink a "bit" better/faster and are much more attractive to the fish. mark.....
