Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

My preliminary design

tomfly

The only thing left should be foot prints.
I am going to attempt a net.
I want to know what you guys think on the initial design. I swung all the radii with a string (not very accurate). I need to purchase a large set of calipers or compass before I make my template. I do have all math compete to swing all the radii. There were more calculations then I anticipated. I felt like I was taking a geometry exam. It is just still in the concept stage and needs some refinement. Is it to radical with the reverse arcs leading into the handle?

I don't think it is too radical to reverse the arcs, but is there a purpose besides looking different? You may knock a fish on the noggin when you net it.:)
Otherwise nice design...I am a form follows function guy...

HAHAHA!

Good one you called a fat guy fat.

Judging by your posts and this drawing did you eat paint chips as a kid?

Is it a ping pong racket?

Why do you have to be a dick. I dont bother you. Dont mess with you What did I ever do to you? So what do you have against me?

I got nothing against you.

I just like busting balls

But I can be a overweight dick at times:)

I was going t say it reminded me of a tennis racket but someone kinda beat me to it.

On a more serious note. I'd like to see the net opening a bit longer as well as the handle. Of course I wouldn't expect you to be using something like this. It would be for us Delaware river snobs.

Tomfly designs nets.

His brother, Dan, is an airplane mechanic.

Take Tom's net, and count yourself lucky...

Not to be on one of the planes that Dan fixed up...

Why is this shaping up to be the cased caddis all over again....... and DDLuver hates the handle.

Isn't it a paddle?

Ok, technically the complete blade with rubbers (eh, huh huh, he said rubbers) is called a racket. However the seasoned table tennis player no sooner buys a complete racket then you would buy a complete fly rod and reel outfit at Dicks or Sports Authority. You get the correct blade for your style of play and apply your own preferred rubbers. Are we geeked out enough here or what?

Dan doesn't really get upset or offended but I would sure hate to be one of the passengers on that plane after he's read NEFF.

I would sure hate to be one of beetle's students after I "graduated" high school (no child left behind), because I wouldn't be able to work a single job due to my lack of education, and would have to just sit at home while all you hard working folks paid for me to sit at home.

Personally, I don't like the reverse curve, but that's just an opinion....

The point where the reverse curve meets the hoop, is too sudden. It's what engineers call a "stress concentration area".
IMHO: The transition should be smoother without a distinct sharp corner.

I'm not saying it's going to break, but if it does, I think I know where....

Don't most net makers use one solid strip of curved wood for the hoop of the net? Gotta agree with Pete. Making am that abrupt angle change strong is going to be tough. I guess if you weren't lifting big fish with it you'd be ok.

Most hand crafted nets are laminated on net forms from several strips. This method is much stronger and with more rigidly. Only the production nets are constructed from a single strip. (It’s cheaper to produce)

How is this coming along? It was shaping up to be a real beaut.......

I started it but been busy at work. My wife had a anchor tooth for a bridge go bad she needs 2 implants.($5000). Had to get a head gasket replaced on one car. ($1200)So I have been putting some OT in at work to cover some unexpected expenses. I do have all my martials for the net (black walnut and tiger maple) I need to get a band saw to shape the handle. I found on at The home depot for $125. Can't spend the cash right now. I should be ready to start building it in June. You will se it when it is complete.
