Millstone River in Rocky Hill

Neurotics have problems, psychotics have answers
I remember reading something about the stretch from the Carnegie Lake dam onward that this was supposedly a good smallie stream. Some questions:
Is this stocked with trout?
How is the smallie fishing here?
Once this gets past the Trap Rock Quarry, where does this go?

Always look for a good place to fish, thanks.:)

Millstone

I've heard good things about the lower Millstone, but not the upper. I haven't fished it myself, although it's on my list. From what I have been told the upper is good for small smallies, certainly a blast on a 3wt, but for big smallies it's hard to beat the Delaware. It's been a while since I fished that too.

I have fished Carnagie lake a couple of times, I also fished in a bass tournament there a couple of years ago.

There are some decent largemouth in there (I caught a fat 5-1/2 pounder), I did not see any smallies caught in the lake.

What's the diff between the lower and upper?

This sounds dumb, is the upper above Carnegie Lake? And thanks for the response:)

Actually I meant "upper" starting at the Carnagie dam, "lower" I think would be the section from Millstone (where Amwell Rd [CR514] and River Road [CR533] intersect) down to the confluence with the Raritan. These are my terms, not anything official. Someone else may call these sections something different, I hope they will say something & correct me.

The lower part has lots of structure, cover, and is deep enough you can put a power boat in at the ramp just off River Road, on Weston Canal Rd. and run upriver. Just keep an eye on your sonar, & go slow so you don't hit any gravel bars or snags. It's a good idea to have a spotter in the bow (or crow's nest if you have one ;)) if you happen to have someone along.

Or, the quieter and more serene way to go would be to put in a canoe at Millstone or farther up river & float down to the Weston Canal Rd. access.

Of course, you can always wade, but I really don't know how wadable that part of the river is. Hopefully someone who has waded it can help out with that.

The Millstone flows into Carnegie at about the lakes midpoint through the locally famous "aquaduct" which directs0 the Millstone's flow underneath the D&R canal and then into the lake. Heading upstream from it's confluence with the lake it heads east and gets more and more marsh like.

From the dam in Kingston all the way to the Raritan is VERY good carp water in terms of numbers and size. Largemouth also out number smallmouth.

Comment on Carnegie lake

Since you brought up Carnegie Lake fishing, I've heard it can be great for bass. But I would wait until Princeton U. lets out. Haven't tried it yet, but it doesn't get fished heavily at all. Looks like a good place for a boat and there is access off of Rt. 27 just above the dam. Somebody told me there are huge carp in there :bigfish: , if that's anyones thing (not mine).

Lads I just might have to place this spot on my to try list. Thanks for the tips.

It is a very bass friendly lake, but keep in mind that it was created for rowing crews. So if you are out in your boat stay out of the rowing lanes. Try to cross them at right angles, and get across as quickly as possible.

The lake is only obout 6' deep on average, with deeper spots by the dam, aqueduct, and the bridge. There are Muskies in there too...

I can vouch for the large carp!!!! the lake looks like a grat LM fishery and has been written up in Mid-Atlantic hunting and fishing.......... I will be investigating with some poppers this summer!

I used to fish for bass in Carnegie. I would wait until 5PM before putting in. You would do fine with a john boat and trolling motor. Not my favorite lake by any means. If you want big bass go further south and hit up Assunpink. Top water at dusk can be awesome! My personal best (5lb 15oz) came out of the lake behind Six Flags. I think its called Prospertown. No motors allowed in there.
