Looking for Sage RPL 4 Wt

Eagle Claw

Trout Hunter
I am looking for a Sage RPL 4 weight 9' rod in 3 or 4 piece, have been searching ebay for a long time and have not been successful. This rod is a very old model perhaps 30 years old. It was replaced by the RPL + which I an not interested in. If anyone has one they would like to part with please let me know, thanks and have a tight lines new year.

Good luck with your search, although I don't believe the RPL was offered in a 3-piece config.

I'd say keep checking ebay. I found an unused 590-4 RPL for $150 last year & a 790-4 RPL years back which I use as a back-up steelhead rod.

Ferrule connection sure is dated on these RPL's but their taper is great and are true to line weight. Very enjoyable rods but compared to the Z-Axis, the in-hand weight feel is quite noticeable.

I do think the Orvis Clearwater rods are similar to the RPL. Also, you might want to check out the Sage VXP which I find to be comparable to the RPL.

If I'm not mistaken, Sage's VXP used the same rod blanks as their RPLs but with different hardware. That is common with rod makers. As they replace their higher end blanks, they keep the old blanks and dummy them down hardware wise and offer them as middle or even lower priced rods even though the graphite is the same.

I'm a huge fan of Sage's RPL+ rods. Like thrashers.wheat mentioned, I don't think you'll find anything but a 2 pc. rod in the RPL line.

Thanks, I will look for the VXP, the reason I wanted the RPL was it was my first quality rod but a two piece, after all these years I could not part with it for sentimental reasons, took it all over the country with me and it set my style of casting for life. However it was a two piece and does not fit in my trunk these days with the modern cars. I wanted to return to my roots of fly casting.

Hard to put a year on it, but until roughly 15 or 20 years ago, ferrule technology wasn't very good and you wanted to fish either a one piece or two piece rod only. Now that engineering issue has been resolved and even 5 pc. or more rods flex properly.
