Locals - Gotta love 'em

Wise-Man
Okay so my report from last weekend.

Fished the Beverkill, Willowemoc and one of it's tributaries.

Started at the B'Kill. I never fish there b/c it's usually crowded but Sunday it wasn't. So, I wet a line and tried my luck w/ streamers, working a deep run from back to front. Nothing. A guy and has wife were fishing worms at the front of the run also came up empty.

Headed to my usual spot up a ways on the Willow. There was a hendricksons hatch arround 1pm, just as they said in the fly shop. Not many but they were there. I didn't see a single fish rise. Worked a couple likely spots w/ streamers on my way down and Hendricksons and attractors on my way back up. Nada.

Started up a trib of the willow and found rising fish. I was pulled off the main road (on DEC land) crouched by the stream bed, working watching, not even fishing, but watching about 2 brookies take bugs off the surface w/ splashy aplom.

No sooner that I made my 1st cast, a man drove up, hopped out of his car and asked me how it was going. Being a sport, I told him the above and pointed out the rising fish in front of me. You know what this guy did? He pulled out his fly rod with a split shot and worm tied to the end and walked directly into my casting lane and started fishing his worm.

I don;t know why (and maybe someone on the board came give me my what-for) but this guy seemed to be a local. i am not, so I humbly respect local practices. i didn't argue, fuss or anything. I actually suck around for a few to see if he could do something I couldn't. He didn't get sh*t, by the way.

But, people, who does that? If someone is clearly working a section (a small one none the less) off river, who just stomps right in and takes over? I mean if I made a cast, I'd have caught him.

I know that most people who do live and fish up there are good and respectful people. I'd guess they feel that out-of-towners like myself are just getting in the way (which is how I feel when all you people wander aimlessly arround the subway system) but some respect, just some, would've made my day. Hell, I would've sayed there until I caught that fish.

I think that the time for a "sacrifice fly"... pick the biggest, ugliest fly you're willing to dump, and cast it into the back of his head, then shout, "oops, I didn't see you there, sorry! Not very nice, but niether was he.

I don;t know why (and maybe someone on the board came give me my what-for) but this guy seemed to be a local.

Temples bulging... Eyes twitching... Blood pressure rising...
Must resist... Must resist...

So sorry that the fish did not cooperate with you; maybe next time.

;)

LOL Are you sure he was not being sarcastic? That sounds pretty strange to me, and I could be the biggest local A hole around here.

Unfortunately, this type of thing happens all the time. I've set up at favorite "off the beaten path" spots only to have others encroach. Personal space differs depending of the size of the water and other factors but some people just don't get it. Unless I invite you over, don't camp out next to me and work the same riffle. The last thing I want when fishing is an argument, so if I were in your shoes, I would've walked. I've tried explaining before, most people just aren't too receptive to the idea. Tailgating on a trout stream, shame shame shame.:sneaky:

What you've got to understand is: There are a lot guys out there who don't really like to fish. What they like to do is talk about what they've caught. There is almost nothing they wont do, to be able to say they caught something. Lying is a last resort.

If you've ever run into a guy on the stream or wherever, and just said hello, or "how's it going?" without actually wanting to know what his "score" is, and he just turned away and grumbled, it's because he's had his spot mugged one too many times.

The world is full of a holes, fishing has it's share.

I've been thinking about this post all weekend. It's kept me up at night. Something wasn't right. It kept gnawing at me. Well, now I've satisfied my search for truth. THIS WAS NO "LOCAL".

First, he "hopped out of his car". That alone should have tipped me off. We all have trucks and/or tractors.

Second, Wiseman wrote "I was pulled off the main road (on DEC land)". We locals wouldn't be caught dead on state land(even if the only witness was a flatlander from Jersey).

Third, this supposed local is said to pull "out his fly rod with a split shot and worm tied to the end". NONE of us locals are going to the expense of buying a fly rod to chuck worms. We're way more practical. That's what the good ol' bass rod is fer.

Fourth and finally, "He didn't get sh*t, by the way". Well there you go. End of story.

This man was from downstate or Jersey. No doubts. He bought the fly rod last week to be like the guys in the Orvis catalogs and THAT MOVIE. He found it was a little more difficult than he expected and tried to revert back to how he caught fish in the pond in the park where he grew up. He wound up on the DEC land because he found it on the map he picked up at the Sloatsburg rest area on the way up the Thruway(and he was in TROUT TOWN, USA, OF COURSE he was a "flatlander"). And of course, he cut in front of poor Wiseman, and well, you city folk just do that(I've seen you race to cut in front of people at the toll plazas on the GSP) (Yeah, same thing). And besides, he was in a rush to catch at least ONE fish because it was Sunday and he had to head back home.

Well, I can get some sleep tonight...
:)

John, who are you calling a flatlander? You used to be a flatlander, and I understand from the "true" locals, they don't like flatlanders who think they are locals. If your losing sleep over this, you need to get a life. I think you should go practice flyfishing a little more, as per your last post about fishing.

Hey! Who picked up your rock?
Glad to see your still hanging on my every post!

But, if you can't "understand" something written for a laugh, might I suggest you take your own advice about finding a life?

YOU have a GREAT DAY!

John, I just like to point out wannabe assholes. Excuse me while take the rest of the week off to catch stripers and then some more trout!

Hey take two weeks. Given your job and your town, you deserve more time off. Have fun fishing!

WOW Dennis, I was under the impression that this was a nice fly fishing site, where people did not use profanity or insult others.... That guy should be banned, for being an asshole. I know you can do it, I have seen you ban other people for using words such as asshole. I wish babyblue would wear a sign on his back next time he is fishing the Delaware. I guess he wont because that is such a cheese-ball handle, people would laugh at him.
