LARGE Black Bear on BFB 7/19

Hllywd76

Get hooked on fly.. just debarb first!!!!
During My evening scout at 6:30pm of a section we fished early in the morning I had a Large Black bear within 50 yds. After regrouping at my truck I headed back down to the stream to see where it went. The bear came back to the river 10 yds from where I was when I saw him. We were only 50 feet apart at this time. The river being about 25' wide. The bear saw and smelled me and headed back up into the woods. I saw no cubs.

Be aware this was in the Fly only section of the BFB.

It was a large Bear. This I know because his ears looked small on his head. If I were hunting it would be a shooter.

Next time out I will be carrying a whistle and an air horn for safety.

Sorry AK,
I coudn't get a picture for your other post about the river traffic. I tried though. :crap: no :foto:

If the one on the left doesn't work, need the one on the right (at a minimum).

There are very LARGE black bears in Jersey - had one in my back yard who must have pushed 400lbs, I swear! On another note, how is this heat wave affecting the FFO section of the BFB? I was looking to head over this week sometime. Thanks.

Temp was lo to mid 60's. running around 24cfs really slow in most sections. lots of fish but really moving around alot. only thing I didn't try was a salmon egg....

There are many black bears in NJ, and many of them seem to like to pass thru and cr@p in my yard! There was one in Jefferson Twp that weighed in at over 750 pounds this year.

If you are concerned, go with the small air horn - I have seen it work when a pack of firecrackers did not.

Early morning fishing on the BFB during summer can be productive, but I would call it quits by 8am during a heat wave like we are currently having. On the FFO, temps will approach 70F during the heat of the day and the highest I have recorded was 69F mid-August 2007 at 4pm at Schaeffer's Bridge. My rule of thumb regarding temperature is to check the weather at Layton, and if the air temp get into the 50's at least 2 nights in a row, I will consider being there at dawn.

NEVER BRING A WHISTLE TO A BEAR FIGHT. Also never play dead for a black bear. If attacked you have to fight for all your worth. Apparently black bears think dead means an easy meal

True.

I heard for Grizzly Bear... play dead.
Personally, I KNOW I couldn't do that.

Once in Kodiak.. well that is a good story when bellied up to a bar along with the face to face square off with a Beach Master Walrus on St. Paul Island.

Personally I'm thinking about bringing my .45 next time. :guns:

Wouldn't mind if I was hunting because I don't think I could poke him in the eye with my fly rod when I would be going the other way.
