Knot I

OK,
I should know better, but I've been using an improved clinch for to attach fly to line and hadn't had any problems. Last trip I was throwing bead heads into the top of a flow and getting hard takes. So hard that the tippet came back empty times three. I know no learning curve. I tied the last bead head on with a trilene knot. Got another hard take but failed to hook the fish. Any advice on terminal knots. I've got a nail knot tool on my clipper and may start using that to make a Duncan loop. I'd love to have a strong easy to tie knot, but realise one may knot exist. thanks,
Frogge.

I've seen that fail, if there is a severe mismach.
In other words, if the hook is to large for the tippet used.
that will cause the knot to fail. I've done it.

The trilene Knot should be fine, the only improvement I've ever found is to burn the tag end to mushroom it, or tie an overhand knot, keeping it right up at the eye of the hook. Usually, these "improvements" aren't neccessary unless you're really getting slammed on the take, or catching very hard fighting fish. Most important is to lube the knot as you're pulling it tight with spit, to make sure you pull all the coils tight.

Try using a Palomar knot, it retains 100% of line strength and is near impossible to slip loose.

your telling me you can tie a palomar knot on those tiny flies? your LYING. lol. that, or the eye of your hook is tremendous.

great knot for bass fishing, impractical for fly fishing. well, imo anyway.

i've never had a problem with a regular cinch knot, OR the duncan loop *i read somewhere, its better for wet flies rather than dries because of the way it drifts, i dunno. just someone elses opinion*

those 2 should be good enough. and i dont believe you need a nail knot tool to tie a duncan loop. i've never owned any tying tools, once you get it down its simple enough

I use a Palomar knot when I'm fishing big nymphs and streamers. I use a Clinch Knot when I'm fishing smaller flies and I've never had a problem with the knot coming undone. I rarely fish smaller than a 12 or 14, so I can and do use a Palomar knot when its practical.
