Is worth getting Sage XP...

acirig

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
All,
I was recently looking to get a 7wt rod and I was going to go for the Sage VT2 but I just saw that Sage discontinued the XP and I have seen it reduced to around $445. This would make the 7wt equivalent only $30 more for the XP. Now I have not casts the XP but I have just heard it is an awesome rod. Just curious if everyone out there thinks it is work spending the extra money to get the XP vs. the VT2?

Trying them would be the only way to know for sure - got to get the rod that fits you better.

Jeff is right, ... You must try to cast one before laying out $$$ for a pricey rod. (if possible).

As a side note, I tesed a Redington all week last and found it as performant as my XP (both 10 ft 8wt 4pc with idential reels and lines.

Not a plug for Redington, ... I was just pretty suprised at the casting and fishing ability of a 275$ rod. ... Food for thought.

On the other hand, ... if you get to try one, like it and buy one, ... Depending on your style, ... they are excellent rods (that' why I have 4 and they are all my work horse rods from everything from small brookies to Atlantics).

It's your call.........

Cast 'em both.

Then decide what works best for you.

Please write up a rod evaluation report and post it in the reviews section.
I'd like to hear you thoughts on them both.

I have a 9 foot 5 Wt 4 piece XP that I think is great for large waters and wind.
See my writeup in the review section.

Wow, ... my 5 wt 9 ft is one of my "light" rods ;)

The 6 and 8 wts come out for wind and big flies. I guess we all have different fishing conditions.

Yeah, I'd guess I'd better get some heavier artillery if I come up to one of your sponsored Fish-Ins ( This year my ruptured biceps tendon kept me away ).

Next year ( if alive or not hurt ) I'm going to make it

The_Sib,

We'll look into maybe doing one later in the season. Smaller juvenile brookies come into the river in schools. As they are only about 3/4 of a lb, most of our southern cousins will be able to handle 'em with their existing gear ;)

The again, ... some backbone IS nice to have in a heavier rod (and a bunch of backing) when you connect to a bruiser.

Yowsa !

Chris,
Most Impressive !
I'd like to get hold of one like that.

I've got some vacation time coming to me.....

Greg, ...

Oh it was a BRUISER.

If ya'll notice, ... the client was using one of my back-up rigs. The rod is actually under 200$cdn. The reel is an old Cortlant LTD120. Just to show that you don't always (or really) need the 1,000$ rigs for salmon either.

The most importnt thing is that the rod/reel gets bought then USED

Lads, fishing equipment is like golf equipment.

Every year my brother talks me into playing golf with him. I show up with my Ping Eye2 irons, Taylor Made woods, and Cobra putter. My brother on the other hand arrives with what would be considered a golf bag stuffed with old Northwestern irons, Wilson wooded drivers and other items discovered at some yard sale.

If say by some chance I had to use his bag of clubs? I'd still beat him.

So it is not the clubs that make you better, but what is between the ears.

I own some nice rods, but my first was a Cortland and I still have to this very day and you know what? I can still catch fishing with it just the same as if any expersive rod out on the market.

It is not what you have, but how you use it.

As always, on your side.
