Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Fly Shops Near Lake George/ lower ADK

troutbum2live

Eventually the wrong fly will become the right one
I was wondering what fly shops you use in this area? Do you think there is a need for one?

Hey TB glad to see you finally made it over here, welcome. Am I thinking what your thinking to do? Business is rough these days in general, but if you have a dream...

Doublehaul can answer this question with more authority...

I havent been to either of these stores in a couple years but there are two that come to mind..

Crossroads in Chestertown (right off the Northway)..It is a cool little General Store just down the street from the Starbuckville Dam on the Schroon River. They have a small selection of flies and equipment.

Beaver Brook Outfitters on Rt 8 in Weavertown...Outdoor shop in a church between Warrensburg and North Creek...They have a small fly fishing section...also camping, skiing, hiking, etc...

There was also a Sports Shop (the Outdoorsman??) on Rt 9 just North of Lake George Village..I dont know how much fly fishing stuff they carry or if they are still in business....

Yeah those seem to be all I can think of...and it sucks!

Really the only option is an orvis outlet which for all intensive purposes is...well...not good enough!

Any other thoughts??

Well, Fran Betters is trying to sell his operation. Adirondack Fly Fishing in upstate New York, Adirondack Mountains-Adirondack Sport Shop
I would say that is the best bet for an established turn key deal. Hey, who wouldn't want to live and work the Ausable?

The Crossroads is Located in Chestertown and has a decent low/mid price range shop. Until the Schroon River gets some better fish management, I'm affraid the need for a shop beyond what the Crossroads does is limited. The river is good for a quick trip but not the destination fishery it has the potential to be.

The Orvis outlet in LG has a limited amount of stuff. It's primary function is a clothing outlet with some left over rods & flies from Manchester so it looks like Orvis.

I had heard that and I agree with you. I do think that there should be some kind of serious shop in the area...There's good fishing if you know where to look or are willing to drive an hour!

Hey,
I live in Queensbury and while I would love to have a full service shop nearby, I expect that it would not be very profitable. Last year I hired a guide out of Loa Ut. . The place is tiny but close to Capitol reef Park. The guide had a small but adequate shop that he described as a "sign". I got the impression that it served to attract people to his guiding buisiness. I know next to nothing about business, but would expect it would be hard to make a living selling flies and equipment, especially when so much is available on the web. Good luck if you go for it. Toodles,Frogge.

When at my place in Chestertown, the Crossraods has all I need. If you're after flies.. I gotta say Orvis flies suck!! Orvis does have some decent sales on equipment though. If you're up by Fran's place, theres the Hungry Trout Fly Shop too. I think its kind of a good thing theres not too many shops in the Dacks because that would in turn bring more people. Some Catskill rivers are shoulder to shoulder at the pools and we know thats no fun.
