Fly Fishing Clothes

Combat Fly Fisherman
OK - this may be a dumb question, but I'm curious...

What does everyone wear to fish in when the weather is cool, but you know you're going to have to be reaching into or under the water during the day?

I often find myself having to reach down a foot or so deep sometimes to unhook a snagged nymph, etc and I hate wet sleeves when it's cold out. Do you use a fishing-type shirt that buttons at the sleeve or maybe something you can roll up? I find myself wearing a t-neck and a fleece. The t-neck sleeves can be pushed up and fleece doesn't hold much water and if it gets wet, it's easy to wring out and it dries fast.

Maybe there's a simple solution, but if there is, I haven't found it yet. Any suggestions?

Regards,
Dave

No real solutions here either.

I like fleece. My jacket is supposed to have sealed cuffs, but that's just hype. Quick drying is the key I like(fleece, microplene ...)

I like rock climbing tights under the waders (in moderate weather). Layer lots and wear a hat.

I like the "guide" shirts that have become (yuk) trendy on and off the rivers. They dry quickly, are usually of fine quality and don't stain (bug dope, blood, etc).

I haven't yet found a reliable setup for the same problem you have a water wicking up from the cuffs. If it's warm enough, I keep my sleeves rolled up inside the jacket.

Lots of luck and happy opening season to you all (It's still 28 deg f here and the lakes and rivers are pretty well all ice locked still).

what do I use? anything, but usually fleece or wool sleeved shirts, with my rain jacket (breathable and with velcro cuffs to help minimize the water on the sleeves).

but there are some expensive but very cool tops made by some outfit. of course, I CANNOT find the link right now. I thought it was sealskinz, but apparently not. I saw them on a striper board and will search. Not cheap but they looked like the best waterproof tops made anywhere. This outfit does surf plug bags as well, so I'll come back to this thread when I find the name.

Rob,

There are some really expensive tops out there.

Mountain Equipment Coop in Vancouver BC has the best prices in North America.

I Think you're speaking of Dry Tops for kayakers. A gortex dry top goes for 400$ cdn$ but will usually be 95% waterproof at the sleeves.

My Orvis jacket tried to mimick the neoprene cuffs, but they have to be cinched down so tight, you can't feel your hands. I tried using my dry top for fishing, but it doesn't have the right cut and the rubber cuffs chaff a bit will casting.

Chris,

understood about the chaffing, and definitely would require trying them before buying them. Both pluggers and flyrodders need freedom of movement, so I would "think" that there are some out there with enough room to allow decent casting.

As I wrote, they're on my list for the future :)

Simms makes nice stuff for under your waders. They've got long john type leggings that have straps in the feet. I HATE when they start trying to crawl up you leg, especially underneather neoprean. Real pain in the butt to have to take your waders down to fix the problem, which will just inevitably happen again. Up top, anything long sleeve will do next to your skin. Woll is cool if you can stand it, (itching, YUK!). Fleece is great over that. About the snaged fly deal..........hell just break it off, and tye another on. Or learn to tye your own, so you don't have to buy 'em at the rip off prices most shops want. And always ask your guide (when your using one) ahead of time, about WHO will be supplying the flies. If he says he will, ask ahead of time as to if he charges extra for that. I hate it when you arrive at a fly shop to meet your guide and the first damn thing he wants to do, is steer you over to the fly bins to spend another $50. Ivey..... Divey....... Sssure his boss likes that, but what the hell do i can about what his boos does or doesn't like. I'd rather supply my own flies. So ask. mark........

Bill ... Agree.

I have some Lamson stuff and really like the Price/quality/performance.
