Fishing Trip Luggage

AKSkim

Boston - Title Town USA
I am seven weeks away from my fishing trip to British Columbia, I began to plan on what I needed to bring along.

Instead of the usual 2-3 bags of luggage plus rod carrier, I decided this year to consolidate it into one bag of luggage and a rod carrier.

I have narrowed it down to two rolling bags.

Cabela's Alaska Guide.

They are both about the same size and cost $189 (LL Bean) $229 (Cabela's).

I am wondering if any members of NEFF have either of these bags and your opinion.

Thank you in advance.

AKSkim:

I can not speak for the brands of luggage that you chosen. however, I can speak for one thing to remember. Now adays the airlines are chaging for luggage and it looks in this case either brand will weigh in well over 50 lbs when packed and can run you between an addtional $50 to a $150 on top of the normal luggage charge. Please keep this in mind because you will have to pay for this at the time of check in on your airline. Secondly, depending on your airline, they might not charge you like they are starting to do now to check your luggage. You still will get hit with the over 50 lbs fee. The fee does vary from airline to airline. The price I informed you about is about ball park. I hope this helps and have a very good trip.

Sorry AK, but I have to laugh here. This is the perfect example of the extreme differences between a cityboy fly fisherman and a countryboy fly fisherman. You're going on a trip, so you want to get a new bag. If I were coming along (hint hint), I would wait until the last minute to pack or even think about packing, cause all my time would be spent tying flies and getting my gear ready, then get any old bag I could find in the garage. If I couldn't find one sutable for the trip (no big holes where my fishing stuff would fall out of or duct tape wouldn't cover), I would go to the local army/navy store and get a duffle bag ($25.00 used) and pile everything inside. Which would only consist of one change of clothes (should do for a 2 week trip), all my fly fishing stuff, and a big bag of terriki beef jerky.

Keep it simple,

CDOG,

They got beef jerky in Canada don't take it. With the space you save you could add a pair of clean socks!

Best bag I have ever bought for traveling was the Patagonia black hole bag. Took it on a 1200 mile trip eight years ago and it held up fine if it had any issues I could send it back for replacement or repair. Does not roll though..

Its also water proof enough that if you drink too many corona's and decide to rest your eyes while your bag is out in the rain your stuff will be dry when you awake. Since that bag only has one pocket you know where your stuff is and its easy to load.

Have a good trip and take pictures!

Travel as light as possible. If possible ship somethings UPS overnight to where you are spending the first night, and ship back day you are leaving.

Four piece rods are best for carry on. Remember you can't lock your bags. If locked they WILL brake the lock. I got locks from LL Bean that can be opened by inspectors and relocked. Somethings can be purchased and tossed when you get there to cut down on luggauge and wieght cost.

Only take what you REALLY need. I have been to Europe (2003 & 2004) fishing and annual trips out west each year for 05,06, 07 doing it this way.

On my recent Bighorn trip, I trusted NOBODY with my rod, so I carried all my stuff on with me. Since I was worried about the gel thing with my floatant, I brought the powder kind. All my gear besides rod fit in the 2nd smallest pocket in my backpack, and I still had room for 5 shirts and 5 pair of boxers. I wet waded, of course. It felt good to get hear some actual nice people bullshit on the Minneapolis-Billings plane.

can't say which one is better, but looking at the catalog pictures, I'd go for cheaper models without all their stuff inside, as you'd probably want room for your own gear (just saying)
