I'm moving to the south jersey area, across the river from philly. I've been searching the net to find some close areas to do some fly fishing. It seems most of the Trout Rivers are in north jersey. I was curious what would be the best and closes river to try out. I’ll be in town next week and would like to get some fishing in. thanks <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

Well, that far south your options for trout are indeed limited. I would point you in the direction of Toms River for decent trout fishing nearest you. Toms River has a good population, stays surprisingly cool all summer, and holds trout over. It also has a Year Round Trout Conservation Area on it. You can find directions to the TCA on the Division of Fish & Wildlife site. The Division stocks other ponds & such down that way for the in the spring too but most of those places don't exactly hold trout for too long. Other than the Toms, I'd say you would have to drive up to Hunterdon County for the next closest, reliable trout streams to you.

While you don't have too many nearby flyfishing options for trout, there are still plenty more flyfishing opportunities down there for other species, both salt and freshwater. Lots of good bass and panfish ponds and pits, rivers, and estuaries to sample down there.

Ridley Creek State park over in PA is ok. There is also something by Valley Forge but you're not moving to trout country by any means.

i live in cape may and frequently drive to the gunpowder in MD or tulpenhocken in reading pa. it's not close, but it's better than nothing and i'd freak out if i couldn't go.

Valley Creek at Valley Forge is C&R, but you are 1.5 hours away from the decent trout water in NJ (Musky, SBR) or the Limestoners near Allentown in PA. I would clock the travel time and also choose the type of water that appeals to you.

There is always the Toms, but that is also 1+ hours away. Also, watch for the closing of streams due to stocking. The few open areas like the Ken Lockwood Gorge will be mobbed.
