Fair or foul hooked

flyman23

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
Hit the KLG yeterday, wanted to get out before the crowds. Slow morning then things picked up. Got some nice browns a rainbow and a large brookie. I never had this happen before, I had the brookie almost to the net and could see he took my dropper. He then took off on another run made a twist, the hook came out and got him in the fin. So when I landed him he was foul hooked. I'm still calling it a fair catch.

I was also pleased to meet ajfromnj who was conducting a Euro nymph class.

Definitely fair. As long as you reel in enough line so that the but of your leader touches your rod, it is a catch. What flies were you using? I am shooting for this Friday at KLG.

Not so fast. According to Hoyle, the rod must be at least perpendicular to the bed of the stream at which point said leader butt touches the rod tip. In addition, the leader must be of a length no greater than 1.25 times the length of the rod.

I say, put it in the record books as a "catch"(which would imply in your grasp), but with an asterisk attached.

Not so fast. He is talking about it being FOUL HOOKED. That means if taken it would have been an illegal catch.

Also this nonsense about leader butt touching the tip and calling it a catch my work for saltwater but not fresh. If you could not have brought it to net and taken it home how can you really say you caught him? Could you have taken him home to eat? No because he got off before that.

If you reel as far as you can (up the leader) and you get the fish close enough to identify it, its a catch. If the fish gets off then your just saving it the stress of netting/ grabbing it and taking the hook out. Same goes for steelies too.

what ever floats your boat. If a fish get off the hook without you releasing it, it got off the hook. Even in saltwater the fisherman has to touch the leader. They show some physical act that they could have brought that fish in.

Does it matter?

Does it really matter?

You let the damn thing go.

Snagging is only if you intentionally go out and try to snag a fish
by lifting or ripping.

For a lesson on snagging, Flyman23, gead to the Salmon River on Columbus Day weekend...Not only will you know how to snag, you'll know flannel button ups are in style, as are duct taped neopremes and yellow colored stringers...

you will also notice that a full set of teeth is not required but optional when snagging

It is a catch -- If you weren't fishing the Dropper and only had 1 fly on and you were able to get the fish to the leader and it got off I call that a "LONG DISTANCE RELEASE"

There are times more often than not that when I get the fish to my boots I will lower the rod tip pourposely let the line go slack to release the fish. This allows the fish to go free without the stress of Netting/Handling the fish. Of course we do have times where we must revive Bigger fish due to the fight tireing them out but i do everything in my power to not take the fish out of the water -- I see so many people remove the fish from the water to take the hook out -- I dont do this -- If I do have to manually remove the hook -- I keep the fish in the water -- I grab the head of the fly and shake it 99 out of 100 times the fly comes off --- If the fish is hooked deep -- I cut the line off. I will also REVIVE every fish I have to manually release.

Peace
Dan

Well, if it is that important to you...

COUNT THEM.

Matter of fact, you have the Official AK SKIM Seal of Approval to count fish you see in the river as caught.

After all, didn't that fish "Catch" your eye.

thank you. Wait until you see the numbers i post. it will rival the national debt. You will be in the presence of greatness and not know it.

I have fished the Salmon River, but not on Columbus Day Weekend and have no plans to. I prefer to fish for steelies. As far as flies, I got several on a orange soft hackle also a BHGRHE and the big brookie was on an orange scud. I'm still putting it down as a catch and thats my final answer:)

Theres no ambiguity here, its not a catch unless your in control, remove the hook, and release the fish (or keep it). Got nothing to do with what the "right" thing to do is.

This makes it sound so painless, pleasant almost for the fish. Do you also provide them with a hot meal and reach-around before the release?

People that actually count fish Its like a kid in high school counting how many beers he drank before pissing himself. its funny

I'm not a fish counter. If I manage a few I'm pretty happy and I usually do much better than a few but don't count them. This was a first for me and it amused me enough to post. Of couse if I kept fish this one would clearly be foul hooked.

I guess I am a 46 year old high school student because I count every fish, what the temp was, what type of fish, water temp ect.. Thats how you become a good fisherman by recording everything and reading your logs over and over again.

Ill disagree with that personally. Nobody that I fish with or myself keep logs a lot are very talented. Goin out blind is really fun anyway. I think becoming a good angler is more getting to places that nobody fishes, and being creative as possible. especially in the tristate area. if you can find fish that do not see pressure, you dont need to worry about all that crap cuz the fish are going to bite.

That seems nice. I think that is still fair.
