Hi Dennis,

I know your Dad was unhappy with the Payne Taper he got from Zietak because it wasn't the Weight Zietak stated, however I think his "Intensions" were good.I'm sure you and your Dad did research on the Taper and Casted the Rod that helped you come to the conclusion that it wasn't a 4wt.But with all the Info going around on the Payne 98 it's uncertain to say what the "Real" Line weight of the Rod is unless you Cast it.For instance check out these Sites. This Site have the 97 & 98 Tapers.http://www.canerod.com/rodmakers/.Go into Tapers and scroll down and click on Jim Payne. Then go to http://www.codella.com/bamboo/thramer.htm,and scroll down to the Payne Section, then go to http://www.pipam.com/rodmaking/taper1.htm,then go to http://www.uwm.edu/~stetzer/Tapers/drtapers/Payne_98_rod_1_84_4.html.

If one were to Build this Taper, after looking at the Taper Measurements and reading up on this Taper. One who only believe that it is a 4 Weight. After all most Info you'll see on that Taper says the same thing.I found 1 or 2 that Listed the 98 as a 4/5 wt but cant find the Site now for some reason. But as I said before,I think Zietak had good Intensions when he sold your Father this Rod.I don't think Tim as a Rod Builder would intensionally Sell your Father a 5 Weight when your Father stated he wanted a 4 Weight.

Anyway, you mentioned that your Dad traded 2 Rods for 1 and I was wondering what was the other Taper and what Rod did he decide to trade for?

Yes it can go either way. I have a 198 taper, which is the 3 piece version of the 98. Actually the blank was built by Zietek and finished out by a friend of mine who is also a builder. The rod handles both a 4 or 5 weight line equally well. Most people I know consider the 98 to be a 5 weight and the 97 a 4 weight. I have seen some sights actually call the 198 a 6 wt. I think you have to try the rod out to find the sweet spot with a number of lines to determine what it really is.

Keep in mind that while rods my have the same taper or very close to it that doesn't mean they will cast the same. Builders use different cane, flaming techniques, heating, ferrules, guide placement and a number of other things that may make the rod cast differently. It's a crap shoot sometimes.

BTW, If anyone's looking to get into the bamboo game I have a few rods I would be willing to part with.

8ft Heddon Black Beauty 1/3, 5 wt,$300.00, VG condition
8ft Granger Aristocrat 1/3, 4/5 wt $350.00 VG, condition
7ft Hal Bacon quad blank. finished out by Marty Desapio. Absolutely beautiful. $650.00 2/2 4/5 wt.
8 1/2 Granger Champion 2/3 5wt, 395.00 VG condition
Dean Parker, 7 1/2 ft Perfectionist taper, 2/2 4 wt $700.00 Absolutely gorgeous rod.

Yeah, I can't fish them all, have about another dozen so it's time to move some.

Hi Andre,

I also saw a Site that called the 198 a 6wt but talked to a Builder who stated the 198 was a 4/5 wt.I also talked to a Fellow on the Saucon who had a 98 and I brought this Topic up.He said that the 97 & 98 were 4wts but said the 97 could be used as a 3/4WT and the 98 could go 4/5.I think it depends on how your fishing actually. If your using a 3 wt on a 97 you'd be fishing close quarters, and a 4wt would be for distance and vise versa with the 98.Your comment about the Building Process just enlightened me!I would of never thought about it like that.I'm acutally on the Market for a Payne but with all this "info" going around,it has me confused!I was looking into a 7ft 3wt Swelled Butt Tweaked Perfectionist Taper from John Channer for a very good Price.

I think I may have that same Quad you have. The Blank was also built by Bacon and I find it to be a very nice Casting Tool,I'm suprized you want to part with it.A great Transitional Rod BTW so if anyone wants to Buy a Cane Rod,I highly suggest you jump on it.If Bacon was to Sell that Rod you'd be Paying $1000-1200 easy!

Try Posting your Goods on Classic,I'm sure some will move.

Rolemodel, can't get on Clark's from work. I'm not that much of a quad guy and frankly if it doesn't seel I'm ok with it. I have two Perfectionists the one listed and one by Bill Taylor. Again, if i don't sell it, no problem. I think I just put them out there here so that if no one buys them i cn tell myself I tried and keep them and have way to many rods.

Hi Andre,

Andre I like your concept of Collecting!I know you could enlighten me on many concepts like Tapers,Builders,Actions,Building to some sort and Fishing them. You rated the 98 to Cast 4 & 5wt Lines equally and would like to know the actions each Line gave the Rod.For instance if the 4wt underloaded the Rod a bit and if the 5wt had the touch.I like to slightly feel the Line unrolling on my Cast.

Can you tell me who's the Originally created the Perfectionist Tapers? What are the Actions like?

Dennis I just remembered your Father got a 98 & 101 from Zietak.

RM, Paul Young is responsible for the Perfectionist taper. With the 198 you can "feel" the rod more with a 5wt. To me this means a deeper slow bend or curve through out the cast, you can let the rod do the work. With the 4 wt line you had to "work" the rod a little more and what i consider to be a fatser stroke but my style is somewhere between the two of them so it works for me.
