confused about cfs flows

EB WADER

Right now the upper east branch has a flow of 181 cfs. The beaverkill has a flow of121 cfs. The stated flow on the lower east is 179 cfs. How can that be if the combined flow of the upper east and beaverkill, which both flow into the lower east, is 302 cfs. Is it possible that it is due to evaporation ?

Hi,

It is very confusing, do not feel bad.

I am quite sure that the Fishs Eddy gauge needs to be adjusted.

Flow is not actually measured at the gauge. The gauge measures the height of the water in feet.

The flow is a calculation from physical measurements taken by USGS crews every few weeks. The flow is measured and then compared to the gauge reading. You can then develop a relationship of gauge height and flow.

The flood changes things.

The gauge is still reading the heighth of the river, but it may be skewed by gravel deposition or removal.

Accurate flow (cfs) readings will not happen again until USGS comes and physically measures flows and compares it to gauge height.

The Harvard flow has been adjusted since the flood. I do not think that Fishs Eddy has been adjusted.
