Catskill Resort

Johnw

Trout Hunter
My son is interested in taking his family to the Catskills between Christmas and New Years and thought the West Branch Angler would be a good spot i.e. clean, inexpensive and fun place to be - however he found that it is closed during that time. Does anyone know of a comparable place that might be open at that time? Is the DRC open then? Any other thoughts? Thanks.

I guess it depends on what it is he wants to do when he's here. Did he pick the W.B.A. becasue of the fishing? If so, he will have a hard time finding anything compareable to that, at that time of year. Most fly fishing related businesses are closed for the year then, except for some fly shops. He might want to just stay at a good bed and breakfast like the Reynolds House here in Roscoe, and then fish wherever it's legal then, (the no-kill). Make sure he knows to bring 5 MM neopreans, long underware, wool socks, and gloves, for fishing. The water will most likely be in the high 30's/low 40's and there may be ice on it. mark

I should have mentioned that he's not interested in fishing at that time but just looking for a reasonably priced place to stay and do some exploring. Has 2 daughters ages 3 and 5. Maybe a bed and breakfast would work.

John, I would second the Reynolds house. It is a great B&B and they have motel rooms. The rooms are nice and it's near the diner and pizza for the kids. I stay there or the Riverside Inn when in the area.

John, the Beaverkill Inn is a very nice place. The most expensive in the area, but well worth it. You get your meals included, and they have an ice cream parlor, anyone can use. Most people don't know this, but anyone who just happens to be driving down the road is welcome to go in and serve themselves a free ice cream cone or cup or whatever anytime during that time of year that it's open. We do it all thru the summer. Course the head cook there is a good friend of ours, the wife of Frank Kutner who owns and operates a fly shop, (Kutners Fly Shop) in the area. Frank has the Darbee birds, (came from Harry's line). Two of the places we take people when we are playing tour guides, is to Kutners, and to the Beaverkill Valley Inn for ice cream. The Inn is owned by Rockafeller so.......................lol. I'm not sure if it's open at that time of year though. If not, definately reserve the Reynolds House. It's so convieniant; not only is the dinner there, but you can walk all over town from there, and just leave the car there. mark

The Riverside is also a good place to stay, for fisherman. Because of it's location you would have to be in the car constantly. There is NOTHING near by, or around there EXCEPT fishsing. And a gas station, LOL. Great food though. mark
