Beaverkill Water Levels

The Beaverkill is going nutz right now. Id like to know if the stocked fish get washed downstream when the water is ravaging like this. What is next years outlook on hatches? I don't think this will affect insect activety, but who knows. how long will it take for these levels to recede to wadable levels, and where am I going to fish this weekend.

Sure is crazy. I was going to visit the area too, but not like this. Instead, I've been hearing reports of tons of Stripers and Blues being caught at Sandy Hook. I think that's where I'll spend my Saturday morning. I was thinking of getting there around 5am or so and fishing to 9:am. I will be using spinning gear.

How big do the stripers have to be to keep one?

You can keep one fish 28" or larger and one slot fish between 24" and 28"

The trout stay on the bottom,behind and under rocks. along the banks and in the eddies. The friction from the stream bed slows the flow. I also was hoping to fish the Kill this weekend. If it comes down alot I'll fish BH nymphs on the bottom. Don't worry the fish won't wash away, at least I hope not!

The fish will be fine as well as the insects.

These big "flushes" of water are actuallly good.It cleans the stream beds of crap and silt.

With all this water look for a spectacular spring with regards to holdovers and big fish in the Bkill.

It should be wadable by sunday am.If not the Wilo will be.

Then again whats wadable for some may not be for others?It also depends on how well you know the rivers? There are certain areas of the bkill and wilo that can be fished and waded when the water is high.I have waded and fished the Bkill at 2500-3000 cfs many times.Streamers and nymphs will be the ticket.If your looking for heads then dont bother.

Do flows like this change the structure of the river bed much? Has anyone noticed any significant changes over the years?

Sure it can.

Over the years the Bkill has lost some of its depth and some of the pools are slower and flatter.I would love to see work done on the Bkill where they "channel "some of the pools.

This would keep the water just a bit cooler in the summer and more oxygen would be availble to the trout.

Joe, i wouldn't mind seeing some work like that done in certain areas myself. Why don't you make a BeaMoc TU meeting sometime and ask the conservation committee chairman a thing or two about it? If you decide to do that, make sure you let me know, so i can be there. I haven't made a meeting in a year or so, because the chapter was starting, (i'm being kind) to become way to buddie, buddie. Seems the only projects that they were willing to take on, were ones that benifited them. People have complained for years about the BeaMoc chapter not being very active, and somewhat lacksadaysacle, and that IS true. But when they do get going, lately it's been geared towards projects that they (the committee) deam important and they are not interested in others opinions. So, good luck if you do decide to offer yours.

P.S. while i am a life member of TU, seems i get a lot more work done with the help of Theadore Gordon Flyfishers, and Upper Delaware TU. I think they look out for the BeaMoc as much if not more than the BeaMoc chapter. TGF with actuall work, and Upper Del. in their newsletter, of which BeaMoc doesn't even have one. mark
