Does anybody have a source for the Australian Possum dubbing for the Ausable Wulff in EXACTLY the shade of rust orange Fran used?

Thats a tough one.

Most fly shops have rust colored dubbing but its not close.

I purchased a few packs from Frans shop a few years ago.

Try giving Jan a call or drop an email at the shop, she maybe able to help.

I believe Fran achieved the body color by using the light golden brown belly of australian opossum and dubbing it over hot orange or red thread loosley enough so that the thread color showed through.

I usually just read the posts here, but this one doesn't come up all that often so I registered to add a reply. A 50/50 mix of Awesome Possum Dubbing in their Burnt Orange and Natural Brown is an extremely close match to what Fran sold. His dubbing patch color actually varied quite a bit in color since he bought the skins by the pound. I purchased two fist fulls around six years ago that they JUST finished drying. Some are pretty dark than what you would normally think was used for the body. I can post a picture later on if anyone is interested.

Regards,
Mark

Its not opossum, but I have been using "Swisher's rub a dub" by Montana Fly company. The orange color is a very, very close match to the flies I bought directly from Fran. The only bad thing is it has some little black rubber legs mixed in that you have to pick out.

I just compared my flies to Fran's, as far as color goes, I can't tell the difference.

Here's a picture of Fran's dyed patches on the left, and the Awesome Possum mix on the right. It's just a rough finger mix and I stuck the thread in there for size reference so you can judge for yourselves.

Mark

I am a little confused. All the ausable wulffs I bought and have fished, including the ones I bought from Fran, have been a lot more orange than that. More like a dark pumpkin than a brownish orange. Have I been misled? Thanks.

So the solution ended up being so simple: I emailed the shop.

I just spoke with Jan Betters and she's going to dye a batch of the real stuff Australian Possum, the exact shade) and have it available at the shop (Adirondack Sport Shop in Wilmington). They'll be on limited hours through the winter so call or email ahead. ausablewulff.com/

Pass the word.

This is some of the rust orange possum that I purchased from Fran.

There is some variation in color from one skin to another, but no diferance in its ability to fool fish.

An Ausable Wulff, and Bomber I tied using a material thats new to me.

The color is close, but I'll have to try them out.

I have a couple of originals tied by Fran because I wanted to match Fran's color. I would say it's difficult to determine by posting photos online because every monitor is not adjusted the same. Myself, I would describe the color as the color of cinnamon dubbed, as stated on the fluorescent orange thread. I have yet to purchase or see one offered, elsewhere, other than at Fran's place that matched in color OR materials.

Thread: Fluorescent Red
Wings: White Calf tail, upright and divided.
Tail: White tipped woodchuck tail
Body: "dirty orange" (I'd say cinnmon) opossum dubbed to thread.
Hackle, one grizzly, one brown, intermixed.

Alright.. this has gone on long enough!

Everyone...

Send me a good size sample of the dubbing you think is what Fran used.

Also a representive sample of a fly tied with your material.. at least 6.

Soft Hackle send me a few of the flies that Fran tied.

I will judge the winner.

Now this isn't the NEFF photo contest.

I will pick the TRUE winner of the Fran dubbing contest.

This is AK Skim.

The REAL winner will receive a 2 pack of Corona for their drinking enjoyment (lime not included).

Hi,
I don't usually post but felt the need today. I had the pleasure of speaking with Jan Betters today. Jan is still dying Australian Opossum for the Ausable Wulff. She is sending me some today. If anyone is in need she said to contact her through www.adirondackflyfishing.com and she will be happy to sell you some. I'm sure she would appreciate the business. If your nice she may even give you some tying and fishing tips.
:)

Thanks for the timely info. I just ran out this past week in preparation for our annual week on the Ausable. I ordered some last night and hope to have it in a day or so. Hope to have LyNcH post some pics upon our return.
