A Wild Trout Stream and not

Started late Sunday morning on a NJ WTS pitching Humpy's to stream bred rainbows with fair success. Brought up over a half dozen with two nice fish in the mix with the largest about 13" coming on my "one more cast" before leaving.


I had about an hour or so of light remaining and I stopped off at a not so wild trout stream for a go at some pikes. Landed eight with the largest being about 34" and pretty good weight.

So did you catch those pikes in your usual place? Interested to know where one can catch pikes such as this on a fly rod, without the use of a water craft (since I currently do not posses one).

Yes, they were caught in "one" of my usual places and from the bank. Without posting GPS coordinates of my favorite spots, I will tell you that the Passaic and all of its tributaries up to the first impassable barriers now have good numbers of pikes. You just need to use your good friend Google Earth and your own two legs to recon different spots for bank access to be able to cast. Sure a kayak will give you greater access but there are still good numbers of places that hold fish and are open enough for some creative casting. I have hung up my kayak for the season and will bank fish nice days throughout the winter months for pikes.

What, no GPS coordinates?:crap: Trust me, even if you gave them, no one is walking back there except those who are already walking back there. I will be exploring back there over the winter as well (less ticks).

As far as ticks go I have just one word. Permethrin! Seems to really do the trick when you wear cloths that have been sprayed with it.

please no GPS but have you been as far or close to Dundee dam? I live a few towns upstream and finding a place to cast from shore is not easy. Well the boat launches and parks are ok but I've only managed sunnies on my 10wt so far. I try not to wade much so that does make it harder. I have fished several places from the brookie/bow waters to the places you might catch a shark. Would love to have seen that river 200 years ago. I also have visions of removing all the dams on Goffle Brook. That trib has no pikes.

I do all of my fishing between Fairfield and Short Hills. I can tell you that they catch some gators in the area of which you speak.

A fellow I know helped stock trout in the Passaic River along Wagaraw Road in 2014 when the hatchery had a disease problem and relocated some fish to non-trout waters. He said that by the time they returned with the second net of fish, the huge pike were waiting for them and tore the trout apart.

I don't doubt that for a second. When the ball fields flood down there you can watch some monsters swimming around in the woods. Tough place back cast though unless you want to wade. I don't. Very soft bottom. I do plan to go down there when we have some high water though. gator in left field.
