A light 7wt rod- any recommendations?

flyI4

Fishizzle, I use worms but I'm looking to upgrade!
So I was fishing with my buddy this weekend and he slipped on a rock, through my rod in the river to free up his hand to grab a rock, and my rod/reel were lost for good. Not letting that POS off the hook so he's buying me a new setup. I am trying to let him off the hook easy so looking for used set ups- however I do want to look into getting a lighter in the hand set up, since my 7wt he lost was a bit heavy and would kill your arm at the end of the day. Any options you guys want to recommend as a well priced 7wt that has a light feel and wont kill your arm all day? Thanks

Hard to believe that there was water deep enough now in any river as to not be able to retrieve a dropped rod.

What rod were you using that took the deep six?

I woulda made him swim for it.. Lol

The Greys streamflex rods are pretty light for the money. Haven't casted their 7wt though.

Sage One gets my vote. I take it you also need a reel. Did Simms even apologize to you?

It was an old orvis clearwater so that didn't really bother me as much as the reel, which was a handcrafted reel made by an engineer I met up in Canada. This reel was a thing of beauty and a one of a kind piece.

JC, The helios 8 wt is fantastic.

I dont like the clearwater in a 7 wt, as the swing weight makes me think I'm gonna need wrist surgery after a full day on the water actually casting (for atlantics on the miramichi, where I used that rod).

I would still use the clearwater on the salmon river for steel, as I just throw 20 foot casts and dead drift with weight.

If you are on a budget go try the tfo ticrx.

A cannon.

The usual advice "try before you buy".

If your arm is getting tired, (on a 9-weight or less) it's probably not be due to "weight", there's something about the outfit that doesn't suit your casting style and requires extra effort.

Maybe it's the "balance"... possibly the line isn't loading the rod, or overloading it... or maybe the action just doesn't suit you.

When you try it, don't just see how far you can cast. Make short and medium casts as well, like you would if you were actually fishing.

I'm NOT an athlete. I haven't been "in shape" since 1967.

  • I have 9-weight rods, (including a relatively heavy fiberglass model), that I can cast all day with big wind resistant bass bugs.

I have a 6-weight that tires me within an hour. It just takes too much effort to load, on "normal" casts.
Someday I might try "over-lining it to see if that helps.

The strain of a long cast on a 9 wt must cause you to crap your pants, old man.

Sorry Pete, but you insulted the Beetle Message Board, although thank you for reminding me of the URL.

I didn't insult the message board, I complimented it for the amazing number of topics and posts.
I may have been a little harsh about a password challenged webmaster....

The 9-weights are easy.
The stupid 6-weight Scott is a problem....should have been satisfied with the old $30 Fenwick...

You're a good man, Pete.

I have an old B2x 7wt that a buddy hooked me up with on shop close-out, it's amazing. Action is different from the lighter B2x's, a little faster. It's one of my main Delaware rods. Maybe you can find some fool selling it on Fleabay for some super fast action rod they can't cast. I also fished my buddies Orvis H2 7wt which was also pretty amazing. I know it's a little pricey, but effortless to cast, and pretty light.

While I would second a Grey's rod for its weight and feel when casting, that brand is discontinued in the US as of January. Hardy got sold as most know and they are dropping the popular Grey's rods. Not sure if they will be honoring warranties or not. If so, go for one as they are/were one of the best deals in the crowded fly rod market.
