Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

It has been a while since i considered buying a new or newer rod.I have a Winston LT 9' 5pc 6wt.I was wondering about their current models.Ever since David Odjantte bought the company it seems they are as bad as Sage is with twenty kazillion models all the time. What do you use if you fish and cast Winston?

I fish with Winston when I bring back a slammer and realize how much of a bad idea it is...

AKA

Winston reminds me of WHISKEY DICK. You can't pay me enough to fish with them. Call me crazy, but I like it broomstick stiff.

Simms,
thats a funny statement.I have a bunch of Gloomis rods along with a handfull of others,I am more of a moderate{gl3} for regular stream trout. For bigger water i like a medium fast to fast stick GL4 /GLX.and for saltwater its definitely GLX.
However i really enjoy fishing the Winston LT for smallies too.

Yer a hoot.

Winston does make a lot of different models some good and some not so good.

Quick break down:

Fast- B3x or MX series.

Medium- WT or the older im6's

I usually fish my b3x, mx, or b2x on the Delaware.

For smaller streams I typically grab my wt's or im6's.

I'm partial to Winston and I own more winstons than any other rod manufacturer.

I personally think the craftmanship is the best and they are a pleasure to cast all day.

Even their "fast" rods are nothing compared to sage or orvis fast.

It really all depeneds on what your looking to do with the rods.

G,

Good write up. I do have 2 Winstons, however I should give them more of my time. Im just partial to the stiffness of my GLX seris/MAX GLX/ NATIVE RUN and Sage Axis sticks...

I tend to be known to chucken 6'' articulated sex dungeons on the deerfield and triple/quad weight nymph rigs while in pocket water, therefore I like to employ something stiff to execute such tactics...

Perhaps Ill head out this weekend some some small shit (ugh) and weild the Winston...

For the style of fishing you enjoy winston rods are probably not ideal.

The winston MX 6wt is a nice streamer rod and does the job nicely but I typically use it for fishing dries on the "D" when theres a stiff breeze.

When you wanna really put the IM6 to the test and no be bothered with those small 20'' browns on the Deleware, come up to the Deerfield. ;)

Come October, prior to REDD building, slobbbb browns are crushing massive streamers all day long. Makes those stringy Deleware browns look like Pduanes goldfish :)

I have been wanting to fish the deerfield...

You gonna hook me up?

I'll bring the beers!!

I'm still not sure about the need for a broomstick rod. I can understand liking them though. All summer here in MT I've fished waters big and small with everything from big streamers to midges on my moderate action Scott & Loop rods without feeling like I was missing something.

WBD,
I am not sure that the Winston LT is a stiff stick, certainly its faster action than the IM6 which by the way i really love casting the TMF 8' 4 wt is a really great stick for the Limestoners, I bet that 9' er you have is a better rod because i prefer to use a 9 foot or longer stick to swing soft hackles an wets as well as nymph. If they made a 10'er in 4, 5, and 6 wt i would probabaly own one of each. I also really like the Winston Perfect reels...but the price is way overpriced..come on its a freakin click and pawl for pete's sake. And like i posted earlier I am a BigGloomis guy especially pre shimano although they have made some great rods since,GLX set the bar an is still a great action,IMX was also great,GL4 is another winner, and last but not least i really dig GL3 for a small to medium stream rod action.
I think whats really ridiculous now is the fact that rod companies keep raising their prices and changing their warranty .If you paid over 500 clams you should have a great warranty period.I have only ever broken one rod that was the manufacturers fault, by my own account i have broken three rods from my due negligence an being sloppy.I am very very careful now.And i would have paid to have those three rod tips replaced/fixed.
IMHO WINSTON makes the most beautiful rods right from the factory at this time..are they worth 700 bucks an up...NOPE. Will I pay that much for anything other than a Spey or Bamboo?Nope
I'll get my rods from FLEABAY or this or several other forums i am a member of,and get a great rod an save a ton of cash.

All the big companies are in that price range now, and you wont be able to get a bamboo for $700 more like $1000 and up. So used is the way to go if you dont want to pay the price. Only a word of caution. There are a LOT of counterfeit goods on some of the auction sites. THey look just like the real thing packaging and all. There is really know way to know or tell. If you buy it from someone on here and know they bought it from a shop then your good. But you would be surprised that the chinese have counterfeited just about everything. You have to live by the old saying "that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is"
